Album Notes

This album contains a selection of solo piano recordings I've made over the last few years. Each piece is entirely improvised, recorded in one take with a little preparation beforehand and some minor edits afterward.

Before recording, I noodle around to try and flush out a chord progression or melody fragment to use as a seed. If I come across something I like, I record a few different variations. The pieces are numbered accordingly: the first number represents the core concept and the second, the variation. Improvisation being what it is, many times the recordings don’t quite work. But after a number of sessions, these ten pieces seemed a good fit.

In the case of the hands suite, the ideas for these improvs came from 3 pieces by Paul Cantrell published on his “In The Hands” music blog: Natrona, Wyarno and Torrington Lope. Each corresponding improvisation was recorded after listening to one of Paul’s.
