Album Notes

“Chris O’Brien picks up where Martin Sexton, Richard Thompson and John Gorka leave off…”
-Club Passim

“The songs he writes brim with sincerity, taking on topics from relationships to cross-country travel.”
-The Boston Globe

Chris O’Brien’s debut CD, “Lighthouse”, produced by O’Brien, Austin Nevins and Ethan Baird, was recorded at Glowdog studios in Georgetown, MA. It features some of the finest musicians in the Boston area. Guitarist Austin Nevins (Deb Talen, Edie Carey), Zack Hickman (Josh Ritter) on Bass, John Sands (Aimee Mann, Lori McKenna) on Drums, Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter) on piano and keyboards and Singer/Songwriters Antje Duvekot and Frank Marotta Jr providing backing vocals, bring this record to life and fully expose the depth of O’Brien’s songwriting.

Boston based singer/songwriter Chris O'Brien is an artist on the rise. Since the release of his February 2007 CD "Lighthouse," Chris has caught the attention of many. He was chosen from a pool of nearly 1,000 contestants to appear on Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" in the "People in Their Twenties" talent contest. The next week "Lighthouse" was the #5 Bestselling Folk Record on iTunes April 21-27.

Chris has shared the stage with such artists as David Wilcox, Brian Webb, Meg Hutchinson, Antje Duvekot, Ellis Paul, Vance Gilbert, Mark Erelli, Ryan Montbleau, Rachael Davis, Anne Heaton, Jess Klein, Gregory Douglass, Jake Armerding and many others.

"As a music fan, I live for those moments when I hear a performer for the first time and detect unmistakable magic. It happened with Shawn Colvin in 1989 and Patty Griffin in 1996. Last summer, O'Brien caught my ear he''s an uncommonly talented lyricist, with a voice that feels comfortable and familiar at first listen."

-Michael Witthaus Eagle Times, Springfield, VT

"Lighthouse is full of beauty, optimism and, well, light."

-Performing Songwriter Magazine

Beautiful songs that stay with the listener

I haven't purchased a CD in a LONG time other than jazz greats ... but Chris' music clung to me, entranced me, I had to have the whole CD. "Ocean Stone" remains my favorite, but I smile whenever any of his songs comes up on the shuffle.

I Am Thunder

This CD is bookended by two utter jewels. Chris, always good, becomes brilliant when singing about a girl. "Melissa" is a delightful closer with acoustic guitar and Chris' voice wistfully longing as the road pulls him out of a relationship, "I am looking over my shoulder at the Green Mountains, biting at my heels with my sights on the ocean, my hands holding firmly onto the wheel." On the opener, "Rosa," Chris' voice bursts joyfully as he courts the beautiful girl, "She is lightning; I am thunder, a moment behind." In between, the songs are good, particularly on "Black Leather Boots" & "Hey Love." This is a quiet CD; it's not going to pop-rock you into submission. It does lull and gently rolls you in. I heard this artist on Garrison Keeler's show on NPR & am glad I went out and got the CD. Enjoy!
