POP CULTURE PRESS
Like the great boxer, singer-songwriter Chrissy Flatt stings like a bee. The title track of her overlooked debut has all the pomp and circumstance of a Ben E. King classic and there are flashes of Shirelles-era pop throughout, though she is grounded in traditional Texas storytelling. Flatt's ethereal singing catapults her songs, written over a period of years, above the Americana landscape. Sure, there's plenty of traditional country (witness "Teradrops Falling," "When Are You Coming Home," or the rousing "Lifted A Whole Lot of Weight") befitting an Austin based singer, but Flatt is inspired by strangely ordinary happenings, like discovering a dead moth, and creates wonderful vignettes around everyday events. Flatt's crackerjack band features country maverick Eric Hisaw (who handles production duties on the album) on electric guitar, Ron Flynt on bass and organ, and Stephen Belans on drums. The album is augmented by other fine players, notably guitarist Scrappy jud Newcomb, cellist Brian Standefer and up and coming crooner Elizabeth McQueen. Hisaw's reverb surf guitar makes "Wish He'd Take Me" a wistful keeper, but Standefer's haunting cello enhances a good portion of the album, and helps to elevate a simple song like "Guiding Angel" into something otherworldly. – David Pyndus
MAGNET MAGAZINE
With a title like Wings of a Butterfly and cover art showing her holding a butterfly in her cupped hands, bleach blonde Texan Chrissy Flatt’s self released debut looks like something from my Bad Malibu Stacy doll collectors. Fortunately, the music within is gutsier than the cover image, marking Flatt as a country/rock singer/songwriter worth keeping an eye on - especially if she starts worshipping other such malevolent insects such as cock-roaches.
BIOGRAPHY
Chrissy Flatt was born in Austin, Tx. The youngest of three girls, she lost her father, who passed away from heart failure at the age of 61, when she was only four years old. His death had a devastating effect on her childhood which has informed her music with a powerful sense of solitude and loss.
After her fathers passing her family moved to the notoriously eccentric bible-belt town of Waco, Tx. Life in Waco as a social misfit turned her inward to a protective shell where music increasingly became her best friend. The music she turned to in those days - childhood folk songs, Buddy Holly, David Bowie, and punk rock records her sisters brought home, beach music and girl groups from the a.m. radio remain important influences today.
Chrissy's family moved to San Antonio after two years in flagstaff, Az. it was at this time that she made her first forays into music under the spell of the legendary San Antonio underground punk scene first trying drums then electric guitar. after acquiring an acoustic guitar and some lessons she began to find her way to the music she writes and plays today.
Her debut CD "Wings of a Butterfly" contains twelve original songs that blend the organic soul of country and folk with the hooks and energy of 60's pop. Recorded at Jumping Dog Studios in Austin, Tx. It features Ron Flynt (20/20, Bluehearts) on bass, Stephen Belans (Beaver Nelson, Kacy Crowley) on drums, Eric Hisaw on guitar with special guests Jud Newcomb on guitar and Brian standefer on cello.
