Thanks for checking out the new acoustic music coming out of the heart of Montana between the Sapphires and the Bitterroots.
"Riding On A Rainbow" is Chris's first release since the "Cascade Timber" projects back in the 1990s (also available here on CD Baby!). This latest release is focused exclusively on matters of the heart, and how they can both lead and push us, and sometimes inspire us to achieve higher levels of awareness. This is a guitar and vocal heavy album; with the deep richness of a super JUMBO carrying the weight of the foundational rhythms (like a heart throbbing with passionate desire), a steel 6-string sounding the gentle higher registers and occasionally whipping up into Western-inspired lead lines (think galloping stallions on the prowl), and a mellow nylon-string classical guitar providing just the right "smooth" at just the right time. Chris fairly croons the vocals, and ranges from oh-so-soft and low-and-sweet, all the way up to full-alpine heights, and down into Grand Canyon-like depths - just like love itself... yes?
The songs have all been maturing on the shelf (like really good wines) for over two decades while Chris went off to serve his country - but they (and he) can no longer deny the Muse their due! And so, they will be sung - and are offered herein for your enjoyment. They don't write them like this anymore folks, these songs (and the three-hundred + more still waiting in the box where these came from) are likely destined to be played and sung far and long - but this is where they took birth, these are the originals as performed by their creator. Doubtless better singers might someday further smooth out the vocals and snap right into those higher notes with a greater ease; and doubtless some guitar virtuosos will someday clean-up some of the rough-around-the edges lead licks and rhythms...but in the here and now they are what they are - zits and all. This is not scientific, by-the-numbers machine music; and not executed with metronome-precision; herein you will find music reflecting the heart and soul of the performer and all the fluctuating dynamic variables we humans are infamous for.
Chris adheres to a musical concept that defines "stereo" as something more than simply employing two separated tracks (left & right). For example: just as we need the slight separation between our two eyes to gain visual perspective, and the left/right separation between our two ears to gain a sense of auditory distance, we also need the slight musical differences between two vocal (or two guitar, or two whatever) tracks to stimulate a sense of musical depth and field. Thus, you will frequently notice slight timing, pitch, modulation, and sustain differences between the voices & instruments on the two stereo tracks on this album - all in an attempt to create the sense of musical-depth-perception ... there is no metronome music in here baby, oh no.
Check back often as we've just got our new indie studio set up (this is the first album), and there's a wide range and several hundred more CMB songs where these came from that will be coming on-line in the months & years ahead. And, too, you should be sure to check out the "Cascade Timber" releases "Earth Home" and "In The Mountains" (right here on CD Baby, how easy is that!) for a whole different theme-focus, these recordings are natural-world & Earth focused and they go back a few decades, so they still contain some of that good-ole-time analogue flavor about them - but they're Chris too - older (or rather younger) Chris, and those songs will be getting re-worked in due time as well. Get ready, here they come!
Please feel free to offer feedback, comments, observations, as you feel inclined (we're easy to reach via the contact web pages)...good humor is as welcome as astute insights. Thanks for reading this far, we hope you enjoy the music.
Be kind to all,
Chris B. & the staff at the Earthan Workshops & Studios
