notes

Thank You
Chuck Mills

Old school cool and new school attitude come together in Thank You, the new effort from singer-guitarist Chuck Mills. The result is eleven tracks of highly-contagious modern R&B, songs of love and hard experience that are by turns streetwise, heart-weary, hope-filled. Smoothly kinetic grooves, plush harmonies and loping beats that get under your skin before your skin even knows what's happening.

It's called Thank You. Truth is, you'll be thanking him.

& Music Critic

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, (now residing in Southern California) Chuck Mills started playing the guitar in his early teens. Listening to Jimi Hendrix, Steve Lukather and Ernie Isley as a young man, influenced the guitarist/songwriter's soulful style and sound. Chuck's debut, THANK YOU blends old school cool with new school attitude. Smooth R&B, clever lyrics, and a little 'bling-bling' pop will keep this CD in current rotation in your player for a long time. This reviewer is partial to vocals + lyrics, so I was bouncin' the minute the album kicked off with "No Romance W/O Finance". The song is all bottom line, "You gots to come with it... If you don't make dollars you don't make sense." The title track, "Thank You" is a graceful ballad. The single, "Whisper In My Ear" is a well crafted pop tune that you find yourself singing along to without benefit of really knowing the words. Songs like "Rachel", "One Woman Man" & "Give My Heart To You" lead you back to a time when life was simpler and we didn't have information overload from our laptops, Blackberries, Nextels. You remember when pop, soul and groove all melded together for a hot sound that was issued consistently from artists like Ray Parker, Billy Ocean, Jeffrey Osborne. These guys held court at the top of the music charts back in the day. Chuck Mills, we 'thank you' for finding a way to bring the cool of then to the smooth jazz of today.

  • Nice debut by this guitarist
    author: Soul Tracks

Chuck Mills' initial solo release, Thank You, is a nice debut, featuring his slick guitar work atop an early 90s feeling groove. Sounding a good deal like his major influence, Ernie Isley (in fact, a couple of cuts on Thank You would have fit right in on Isley’s 1991 solo album High Wire), Mills writes, sings, plays guitar on and co-produces everything on Thank You. The album is at its best when it is straddling the soul/smooth jazz area, such as on the strong title cut, a lovely ballad. Even better is the lilting “Whisper In My Ear,” a popular cut on smooth jazz stations in Europe and a nice introduction to Mills’ formidable talents. I've heard your song Whisper in my Ear first on Smoothjazz.com Radio and thought, I need to get this CD and as I was trying to locate this CD in the Listening Loft on Smoothjazz.com it was not offered there anymore. Sandy Shore gave me your email address and you suggest CDBaby to buy your CD. I bought it right away and now..... I can't stop listening to it. I was always looking for this kind of music and never really found something comparable, especially here in Germany. Really excellent. I can't wait until your next CD is coming out. THANK YOU again, Chuck and you're are on the right way with this music. I've told many friends about your CD.

  • No, Chuck...thank YOU!
author: Barry Towler ("The Lowdown" - Soul Express)

Chuck Mills is a guitarist-vocalist of the highest order and his album is one that I enjoyed from start to finish. I was immediately sold on this CD when I heard the SUPERB Whisper In My Ear. The opening bars of the track with Chuck’s vocals had me thinking it was an unreleased Ali Ollie Woodson song! I can hear a prominence of Ernie Isley’s vocal talents too, as well as the obvious guitar influence of the great man. Crammed with ballads, midtempo pacers and bass-trembling funk, this should appeal to a wide variety of soul lovers. Thank You is a very worthwhile CD that I can put on and leave on. Chuck crafts his melodies very well indeed and uses his skills to weave the magic of soul, funk and contemporary R&B to good effect. Apart from the obvious Isley influence, I also hear a healthy smack of Chuckii Booker in the bass lines too. Fans of classy modern REAL soul, and fans of the independent scene will lap up this CD, and I cannot recommend it enough. Get back in that studio, Chuck, as this is not enough!!!

  • He sings with the soul of yesterday. Plays great guitar!
    author: Robin Gordy

He writes and sings with the spirt and soul of R&B soul of yesterday.Yet,the tracks are slamming and hold up in today's market. He plays guitar with the same fire of Jimi Hendrix,Ernie Isley and Steve Lukather. Not to mention he is so handsome! This is Chuck Mills.

  • Wonderful CD!! I did not hear any curse words or derogatory remarks.

This CD would be loved by all, especially women. There is plenty of begging in Whisper in My Ear with the "baby please...baby please" verses and moaning at the end. Move over Keith Sweat! There will be a few babies made to that tune in addition to Give My Heart and One Woman Man. Chuck Mills, Love is All You Need to Thank You when She Gave Up On Our Love....Cause Pimpin' Ain't Easy. Big word up!!

  • author: A Fan

Chuck Mills is definitely a rising star who has yet to scratch the surface of his multiple talents. Not only is this guy a talented singer and guitarist, he also knows how to tap into the soul of relationships. "Love Brought Me Home....", expresses the soulful depths and sensual romatic overtones of full sound with the right tracks. Whisper in My Ear is another example of how Mills understands that in R&B, you must touch the soul with sound and the mind with lyric. "Rachel" ....what can I say but that I can only imagine what type of woman inspired that tribute to the female player. Finally, "Everything's About Her" demonstrated the musical talents that Mills has on the guitar. Why is this talent going to waste by not "gigging" with known artists who can use his skills? We'll just have to ask Chuck.
