Project History

When New York native Scott Albert decided to start writing industrially-influenced music in the late '80s, he was not thinking of what might be the popular thing to do. Nor did he ponder a recording deal with visions of commercial success. But in the late eighties as Scott sang and pounded the skins for NYC thrash band Immortal, he developed an interest in industrial music that altered every aspect of his career.

"By 1990 I had become totally fascinated with electronic music and sequencing. I began to experiment heavily with keyboards, and had a band going with a friend who was a DJ for a weekly industrial show" explains Scott. Yet as he was introduced to Skinny Puppy, Einstuerzende Neubauten, and other industrial bands, Scott noticed that a major element of his own musical past was missing. "I really liked the inventiveness of the genre, but nothing I heard back then did much with the guitar, particularly heavy guitar, which was my primary influence. I tried to fill in that gap with my own music from then on, which is how Circle of Dust was formed."

Scott signed on with R.E.X. Music shortly afterward, and released the self-titled Circle of Dust debut in July '92, combining elements of industrial and dance music with guitars to create an aggressive and distinctive blend of styles. He continued soon after pursuing a sound with heavier guitars and more aggression, which resulted in the Circle of Dust Brainchild album (originally released as the side project Brainchild - Mindwarp.) Between albums there was a special 7" release which featured a re-recording of "Dissolved" from the Circle of Dust debut and "Telltale Crime from the Mindwarp album. A video of "Telltale Crime" was also produced with the intense filming location of the Tennessee State Penitentiary, which, originally built in 1897, was closed in 1992 due to "inhumane conditions."

Marked as a perfectionist, and now fully equipped with his own studio, Scott Albert made the decision to completely rerecord the Circle of Dust debut and add four new songs ("Onenemy", "Self Inflict", "Parasite" and "Bed of Nails") for a January '95 release. The original was released independently by R.E.X., but the reissue enjoyed national distribution through R.E.X.'s RED Distribution agreement.

A fully functional live band, Circle of Dust showcased Scott Albert performing vocals, guitar, keyboards, and the second on-stage drum kit along with the full band.

Albert subsequently collaborated with friend Buka on the acclaimed Argyle Park project. Former Circle of Dust guitarist Daren "Klank" Diolosa also spun off his own solo project and Albert's younger brother Dan "Leveler" would eventually record material as Level. Fans would eventually dub these outfits, plus numerous side projects and collaborations, the N.Y. Posse, referring to their home base near New York City.

Albert decided to retire Circle of Dust in 1996 after problems arose with R.E.X. Music. He resurfaced in 1998, however, to release a final album entitled Disengage on Flying Tart Records. This album featured a more synthesizer-driven electronica sound than earlier releases, and included several unreleased tracks recorded between 1992 and 1997, as well as several remixes originally recorded for a never released maxi-single, RefractorChasm.

At around this same time period, Albert was working with Angeldust, a project described as a cross between Marilyn Manson and David Copperfield with Circle of Dust-ish music.

Despite receiving high acclaim from fans for Disengage, Albert kept his word about leaving the "Christian" music scene. He changed his name to Klay Scott and now fronts secular industrial rock outfit Celldweller.

REVIEW....
Circle of Dust (Re-release) - OVERVIEW: Ah, a step up from COD's last release. This CD decreases the metal guitars and increases the electronics and beat rhythms. This CD is a re-release of Circle of Dust's debut self-titled, songs re-done with better sound quality. This is a semi-melodic CD with great electronics and great complimenting guitars. That hidden talent you saw in "Brain Child" is now blooming. Remember to check out the hidden track at the end called "Dancing with Medusa"!
Original release date of this version RELEASE YEAR: 1995

I have been searching for circle of dust albums for a while and finally found this one. It's a good cd, and would have rated it higher if I had not heard "brainchild" first which in my opinion is their best album. This Cd is great though. It has the normal circle of dust harshness, samples, and all around good feel. A must own for any fan of industrial music, but try and find "circle of dust - Brainchild" you won't be dissapointed with any circle of dust releases
