Part Detroit, part steel town Hamilton, and part Manchester, England – City and the Sea is four guys who love to play music and proudly wear their rock ‘n’ soul hearts on their sleeves.
The band’s debut album Long Time Comin’ (2008) followed a path of classic bluesy, country rock and explored the fringes of soul — establishing a “Marvin Gaye meets the Rolling Stones” vibe. The album received wide airplay in Canada and Italy, and was nominated for “Best New Recording” at the 2009 Hamilton Music Awards.
After releasing a tribute cover video single of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, and spending the first half of 2009 touring Canada and Europe, the band spent the latter half of the year rethinking their sound, and writing and recording new songs.
The first new offering, Leave A Light On, is a four-song EP that maintains the band’s vocal-rich and soulful R&B roots. And while the new EP offers the solid trademark melodies, harmonies and overall musicianship that defines the band’s hard rock ‘n’ soul sound, City and the Sea has revved up the intensity of its delivery more to the likes of Oasis or The Black Crowes.
Rhythmic, melodic, edgy – Leave A Light On also continues the recording relationship established at Vibewrangler Studio with producers Glen Marshall (Feist, Apostle of Hustle, Dave Rave) and Michael Keire (Dark Mean, Wildlife, The Foreign Films).
