Album Notes

"This is a terrific EP, doing proud the tradition of Television, Replacements and Flaming Lips." - Jim Santo www.demouniverse.com

Recorded with the production team of Michael Tudor and Chris Feinstein (Moby, Duncan Sheik, Iodine), Clara Venus EP showcases the original songwriting style and diverse influences of a band whose raw and energetic live shows have captured crowds in New York City and beyond.

Making NYC their home in the mid '90's, the band (Jon Crider - Vocals and Guitar, Tommy Emery - Drums and Bick - Vocals and Bass) quickly became a popular act. Recording their first cassette release in 1997 with indie favorite musician and producer Kurt Ralske (Ultra Vivid Scene), the band continued to develop their songwriting and stage show, performing frequently at venues as varied as basement clubs to showcases at the CMJ Music Festival. A supportive music press coupled with a devoted fan base has made Clara Venus a well-loved band at the city's best rock and roll venues.

The last three years have been a highly productive time for Clara Venus. A line-up change in 2000 forced the band to rethink its direction and goals. While deciding to keep the name, nearly everything else about the band changed. Gone were the glam-rock influences and melodramatic power-pop stylings, replaced instead with a mature driving rock and roll sound that at times flashes a rootsy grin and at other times delivers a punk rock scowl.

I wish more bands sounded like this.

Most current bands I hear are totally unimpressive and unimaginative. Clara Venus is a band that successfully blends a modern sound with the backbone of the best music I grew up with. Most power trios you hear today have forgotten music's melodic integrity; Clara Venus totally gets it man.

Clara Venus has crafted a new ep that establishes the band as one of the best emerging bands in New York's East Village music scene. Well written tunes, catchy hooks, and a driving beat, makes Clara Venus' music something you want to keep set to replay. Influences from 70's era glam stylings to current gutter rock bands like Queens of the Stone Age, make this ep a keeper. rock on CV

Creative Momentum

I got to watch this band from the inside for a while, and it was a pretty rocky start. The band went through a total revolution when they scaled down to a trio. Realizing the Clara Venus potential is something we had all talked to death. Now it's finally happening in a creative explosion. Each of these guys is really putting it out there and creating something that is original, honest, passionate and most importantly, fun to drive to. Buy this CD! If this band stays together, they will be one of the great ones. Jon Crider is the modern Bob Dylan, just listen to "Don't answer the telephone" and buy it!
