You won't regret it.

I was first introduced to Assad's music when I purchased Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg's recording of her concerto, the second movement of which I am particularly fond. Salerno-Sonnenberg's characteristic passion may have been what first drew me to this piece, but in its lyrical form "Ondas," which Assad includes on this CD, she brings an exceptional sense of fervent longing to the work.
Never one to be left wondering, I had some Portuguese acquaintances translate the lyrics for me, and my initial impressions were confirmed. Assad is not only a poet of the finest caliber, but the beauty of her voice carries the emotion of the lyrics far beyond what is simply rendered by the words on the page.
"Ondas" alone is worth the purchase price of this CD, but there are other enchanting works to be found here. Assad also gives us beautiful Portuguese pieces in "Lembrancas" (another confirmation of her poetic powers), as well as her cover of Lobo and Baraque's "Beatriz." Additionally, "Invitation" includes a playful rendition of "Miss Celie's Blues," and a richly complex version of "My Funny Valentine"--both of which are bewitchingly transformed by Assad's deeply moving voice.
It is obvious from listening to this CD that Assad might choose just about any musical direction for herself, as her talent will most certainly allow it.

The arrangement of Invitation was worth the price of the CD. Clarice's piano arrangement and her interpretation of Invitation was amazing! All the songs were beautiful and her voice grows on you.

With the compositional integrity of contemporary classical music, the harmonically-rich sophistication and expanded textures of jazz enhancing the luscious, supple influence of Brazilian folk music, pianist/vocalist/composer, Clarice Assad, delivers an arresting, nimble collection of exquisite songs that fall as gently on the ears as the first bird calls of early morning. Maintaining sheer elegance even while venturing into virtuosic pieces, bubbling with kinetic momentum, Assad seizes a sound world rich with vivid color and imagery. A gorgeous blending of jazz, Latin music and classical styles.

What do I know about Brazil? They know how to play soccer: to watch the Brazilians play is to watch an athletic ballet. They know how to play beach volleyball: at the Athens Olympics the men won gold and the women won silver. They know how to party: Carnival. The men are handsome and the women are beautiful. Oh, and they know how to play music and sing … I mean, really plaaaay and siiiing: Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, …. You can add another person to this list: Clarice Assad. Clarice knows how to plaaaay and siiiing. From the opening lines of “Invitation,” with her multi-octave voice soaring over the melody and then scatting with her frenzied improv line, to the last mellow chorus of “My Funny Valentine,” you know you’re listening to the soul of jazz, Brazilian-style.
