notes
On Live Band Tonight, Claudia Russell demonstrates the energy and excitement of her live shows with her unique blend of folk, blues, country, pop and traditional music. Russell has as expressive voice that is as much at home on a whispery ballad as a full-tilt Buddy Holly-styled romp. Her songs deal with the classic themes of songwriting: love, longing and loss – in a distinctive voice. And she is unafraid to tackle the songs of others, often yielding unexpected and new results from well-known songs.
Sing Out magazine said "Russell has a voice that is superior to most in the crowded field of singer songwriters." Her first two CDs, Song Food and Ready To Receive earned Russell spots at the Kerrville Folk Festiaval, the Boston Folk Festival and premier folk stages across the country.
“Watching Russell and her Folk Unlimited Orchestra is like taking a cross-country trip in a gleaming Airstream trailer, traversing the vast American landscape, stopping at wondrous musical landmarks along the way. The band might kick off with some So Cal style Folk Rock, head south for some accordion fueled border town folk, travel onto Buddy Holly’s Lubbock Texas for some retro rock, then sweat their way through some hot Louisiana cajun, head up into Nashville county, and make their way into Kentucky for a Bluegrass run. Then its onto a pit stop for some St. Louis Blues and beeline to New England for some sincere singer songwriter folk.
Lesser singers might stumble, or sound fake and uninspired. But Russell and her band possess an uncanny ability to get behind each song and make it their own, so the segues sound natural and the changes in style work to reveal different sides of a strong musical personality.”

live band tonight
author: kathyi loved this cd. so energetic and lively! thank you.
Move Over Steely Dan , and take note: - Perfection Can Be Live!
I don't usually buy “live recordings”, as I've found that most musicians need the controlled environment of a studio, to pull off a tight performance. That was not the case with Claudia Russell's Live Band Tonight! These guys must really enjoy playing together…and must do so a lot, as they were so tight, so atuned with each other's playing. The instrumentals were all at once, both precise and really natural sounding. The music and the transitions between the songs, was fresh, alive, up-beat. Everything just fell into place and felt so comfortable. It was like slipping into your favorite pair of jeans. It just felt “right”. I'm really glad that I bought the CD. I'm looking forward to seeing them play live, next time they're here in LA.
Awesome live album
author: tom barrettThis is a very well produced live CD containing several songs from Claudia's previous two releases. This band's instrumentation is obviously different than the prior studio work, and the energy of the live performances really comes through. There are a few new songs including a beautiful one called The Hard Parts Letting Go.
