Cleve And Sweet Mary
Ozarks meet big city. Blows up real good.
Two of Austin’s most legendary performers, Cleve Hattersley - the fearless leader - and Sweet Mary Hattersley - the fearless star soloist - of Austin musical pioneers, ‘Greezy Wheels,’ are on the road and coming your way. Cleve, the Wheels’ founder and principal songwriter, and Sweet Mary, one of Austin’s all-time most-beloved fiddlers, are performing the tunes that made Greezy Wheels Texas legends, along with fabulous new material, and much, much more.
From cosmic cowboys to Andy Warhol’s superstars, everyone loves “dem ole Greezy Wheels,” and Cleve And Sweet Mary bring that Greezy spirit with them wherever they go. They are the embodiment of that spirit.
“These guys are the real deal - you’ll never see anyone else like them!” - Curtis Clark, owner Evangeline Cafe, Austin.
Greezy Wheels was the first band out of Austin to be signed to a major label (London Records) in the heyday of the Armadillo World Headquarters, and since that time, they have shared the stage with many of the biggest stars on the planet, from Bruce Springsteen to Willie Nelson to the Grateful Dead. In one of the greatest moments in Armadillo history, Sweet Mary taught Jean Luc Ponty how to play the ‘Orange Blossom Special’ backstage, then linked arms with Ponty, as they played it with Frank Zappa And the Mothers Of Invention.
After a nearly quarter-century “hiatus,” Greezy Wheels re-formed in 2001 and have since released three independent CD’s, ‘Millennium Greezy,’ ‘HipPop,’ and ‘String Theory.’ All have received raves and substantial airplay nationally, including on XM Satellite Radio. A fourth CD is in preproduction, and Cleve And Sweet Mary’s first duo CD, ‘Totally,’ is out now.
Cleve's sister, Lissa, also a founding member of Greezy Wheels, has also recently released an album, a solo piece co-produced by Chris Gage called, 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation.' Both new Greezy side projects are getting great early response.
Cleve and Sweet Mary and Greezy Wheels have continued to have those special moments, including joining old friends Levon Helm and Larry Campbell for Levon’s super cool ‘Midnight Ramble’ series at his barn/studio in Woodstock, and years of craziness with Kinky Friedman that have taken them around the world and straight through the world of politics.
And they still rock it. Big time.
