Album Notes

Clubbo's CD sampler vol. 2, which spans 40 years of pop music history, brings you more of the triumphant hits and catastrophic misses that distinguish Clubbo from other, lesser-known independent labels.

From the rousing "Ski Baby Ski" by Swiss Invasion artist Ava & the Avalanches to the headbusting "Rage of Baphomet" by '80s metal gods Smasher of Things, these 23 tracks by 16 of our favorite Clubbo artists represent a truly diverse sampling of the label's unique sounds.

About Clubbo:

For more than 40 years Clubbo Records has epitomized the maverick spirit of the old-school independent record labels.

In today's era of test-marketed, formula-bound pop culture, it's easy to forget there was a time when the soundtrack of daily life was composed not by multinational media conglomerates, but by low-budget visionaries like Clubbo co-founders Chet Clubb and Morris "Bo" Bogerman.

In many ways, Clubb and Bogerman were no different from the era's other indie-label opportunists, who would tirelessly scour the streets for any music that might generate slightly more cash than it cost to produce. Like compulsive gamblers, Clubbo would bet on anything: novelty and kiddie discs, global exotica, bandwagon-jumping quickies.

What set Clubbo apart was the label's occasional knack for generating music so far outside the mainstream that the mainstream had to shift its course in response. As a result, the Clubbo catalog ranges from well-loved (or at least well-known) hits to freak-bait for the record-collecting lunatic fringe.

After languishing for several years as a minor holding of a major label, Clubbo is once more in the hands of low-budget bottom-feeders. Despite our limited means, we pledge allegiance to our twin tasks: safeguarding the Clubbo catalog and releasing new music in the old Clubbo spirit.

Clubbo has had several slogans over the past four decades: "The Wickedest Wax in the West." "Home of the Swiss Invasion." "Tunes for Every Trip." But there's one slogan we like best: "Music to Believe In."

We believe in Clubbo and its legacy of bold, if sometimes ill-advised, music. Our ultimate goal: making a believer out of you.

REVIEWS

One of this decade's coolest music ideas

I am in prostrate awe at Clubbo's clever chameleon genius. Clubbo takes everything great about the elaborate, conceptual music industry/genre satire of Christopher Guest or Neil Innes and raises it exponentially. And as with Guest/Innes, it works because the song writing and execution is so solid. Vol. 2 also displays an even stronger ownership and more refined final product than Vol. 1. It is disappointing that there aren't liner notes. Sure, everything's at clubbo.com, but how long will they keep that site live? The most severely problem is the distressing lack of any new Clubbo samplers in the past 3 years. There's SO much more to explore with this! Please at least do a Clubbo Vol. 3 as an enhanced CD with an archive of the entire Clubbo site!

I believe in Clubbo

Who cares if there ever really was a Clubbo records? I believe. Because the songs are real, and fun, and sound as if they had been created in the times they are channeling. All as 99 and 44/100 percent believable as their riotously funny website. And yet all the songs have something about them that could only have been created now. I like vol 2 as much as the first. Especially keen on: The Fold, Pianogirl, Decoupage, and Ski Baby. The "Swiss invasion" lives!
