Album Notes

Chris Minh Doky is a prominent jazz bassist who has released several albums and tours regularly. This New York-based artist is considered a master of the upright bass, and is recognized for his passionate delivery and exceptional skill. Doky carries on the distinct Danish bass tradition of the acoustic bass being a lead instrument. Doky’s ability to perform with equal creativity as both a solo artist and sideman has put him on the list of Top 10 Bassists of Reader’s Polls and earned him Artist Of The Year awards. In addition to leading his own band, Doky continues to play with such renowned jazz musicians as Randy Brecker and Mike Stern.

Doky released this Listen Up! album in 2000. It’s a fun, funky album, which includes Doky’s unique renditions of Prince’s “1999” (combined with Herbie Hancock’s “Cataloupe Island”), Bonnie Raitt’s “All At Once,” and “Rocks” by Randy Brecker. The album also contains several fine compositions by Doky, including “The Dapper King,” “Rain,” “Asiacanese,” and “Reincarnated.”

On Listen Up!, Doky is accompanied by such stellar musicians as George Whitty and Larry Goldings (keyboards), Louis Winsberg and Adam Rogers (guitars), and Clarence Penn (drums). Also making guest appearances on this album are renowned musicians John Scofield (guitar), Kenny Garrett (alto sax) and Makoto Ozone (piano).
