Album Notes

Coastal Soul is comprised of Phil Klaus, Jamie Martin and Chris Barrow. With three varying musical backgrounds but similar influences, goals and aspirations, the trio have developed a unique stage show full of good times and great tunes. The boys are busy gigging it up and down the east-coast of Australia. The band had been together for four years before deciding to go into the studio to record an album (for the very first time) in 2011.

Practicing for "Everyday People" started in September 2010 and spent around 2 months writing, rehearsing, re-writing and fine tuning the 10 songs they wanted to record. Alot of their songs had already stood the test of time during their stage shows and live gigs. "We always wanted to make a full length album straight up because we didn’t think an E.P. would have showcased the variety of songs we have." - Jamie.

All in all the whole album took around six months and was a massive learning experience for us all. Although we are busy trying to get as many copies out there as possible we are already planning our next album which will probably take shape over the summer of 2011-2012.

Summer Days
"We are grateful for where we live and love what we do!" - Phil.
Summer Days captures the feel of life on the Aussie coast. It was recorded in Byron Bay during a two day trip to Rocking Horse studios. Martin's acoustic-driven rythm is perfectly offset by Klaus' percussion.

Everyday People
"It's what we are! This song has been churned around our live shows for years, before settling into it's current form." - Jamie.
The title track of the album has Klaus' haunting slide symbolising the daily drive and direction of our everyday lives. Recorded in Scratch and Bite Studios in Coffs Harbour.

His Castle
"I wrote this song one afternoon in the comfort of my back shed. The timely storm clouds had just opened up. The rain seperating me from the main house. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my house and my family, and how fortunate I am!" - Phil.
A man's home is His Castle. Another Martin driven rythm, punctuated by a flowing blues lead from Barrow. Another Rocking Horse recording.

Up The Coast
"It's a sea-change song!" - Chris
A song about leaving our major cities to settle for a chilled coastal life. A song for the sea-changers, slightly bluesy with a twang towards relaxing acoustic, this song was recorded at Scratch and Bite.

Deep Ocean
"Take from this song what you like! For anyone who may have thought they were losing someone they love!" - Phil.
An ocean ballad. Some silky smooth fingerpicking from Martin, the echo of the sea in Barrow's distant leads, culminating in a powerful vocal delivery from Klaus. Beautifully mixed by MuZZ at Scratch and Bite Studios.

What You Need
"It's a Jamie special! Solid rythm and vocals driven by the big-dog!" - Chris.
With an everchanging world, we are constantly presented with the newest, next best thing. What You Need reminds us that in many cases, we already have what we need, both in life and relationships. Coastal Soul's first ever attempt at a studio recording in Rocking Horse, Byron Bay.

Kaleidoscope
"Life from a different perspective!" - Phil.
"Another of our songs that has morphed over time, and now it's recorded, it feels complete." - Chris.
Lose yorself every once and awhile now... things from another point of view. Things get loud on this track with Barrow's blues influence producing some punchy leads. The soul rock! Recorded in Byron Bay by Kieren Fleming at SAE.

Outside Looking In
"It could be about me!" - Phil.
Another coastal song about family life and the surf culture that is ingrained in east-Australian society. Listen for the mention of the "Shed of Soul" where many ideas are worked over by the trio. Like the swell rolling in on nearby Sawtell beach, Klaus and Martin's acoustic delivery intertwine, eb and flow as Barrow's well placed Harp is ever present.

Sometimes
"Sometimes you gotta get up, get out and play now!" - Jamie
Coastal Soul branch away from the mellow acoustic, for a visit to rock, as the message in this song suggests that sometimes you just have to motivate yourself in life.

My Minds Crime
"For anyone with or that knows someone with a condition of the mind!" - Chris
Beautifully vocal delivery from Klaus. The soft acoustic number is the perfect finishing song for the album.

Enjoy!
