Currently employed in many areas of the music industry, Jeremy Coates is one of Western Canada's busiest working bass players, with more than fifteen years of performing and teaching experience. Comfortable in the studio, classroom, and concert hall, Jeremy has developed a variety of approaches to jazz improvisation with respect to his instruments, which include acoustic bass, electric 4, 5, 6-string basses, as well as tuba, guitar, and drum set. He has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and has performed at the Montreux jazz festival.
Jeremy now resides in Calgary and is working on various projects towards the completion of his Phd in music composition, which include a concerto for bass and chamber orchestra, a set of variations for brass quintet, and a suite for double bass and marimba. In addition, as of February 2007, Jeremy has completed a solo album of original jazz and world music, featuring fourteen local musicians.

This is definitely an above-average debut CD from a highly-skilled bassist and composer. Coates slips easily between the roles of soloist, primary melodic instrument, and accompanist throughout each track, bringing in excellent renditions of his well-thought-out melodies on a wide array of bass guitars.
His compositions are also worthy of further note. His traditional jazz roots are clearly evident in his tunes and his soloing, but even his bebop melodies sound fresh when set against such solid grooves and arrangements. Solo performance highlights include tracks with saxophonists Jim Brennan and Dave Camwell, as well as keyboardist Kristian Alexandrov. Indeed, don't miss the track called "1/2-Step Up" -- the groove is burnin' and so are the solos.

I first heard Jeremy Coates at his CD Release party for Notes by coates. Terrific player, and the band was wonderful. Saxman Dave Camwell was outstanding and the whole album is interesting to listen to.
