Cody Geil has been playing the violin for 19 years. Starting with her mother’s guidance, she started studying Suzuki violin when she was 3 1/2. Originally born in San Antonio, TX, Cody grew up for most her life in Chicago IL. She grew to love classical music and would listen to it as she went to sleep every night. Piano was also part of her earlier childhood and she started lessons at the age of 6.
Always having a desire to express her ideas about music, Cody began to improvise over the classical music she listened to so often. She started going to the Merit Music Program in 1990 and began playing in many chamber groups and orchestras. Edgar Gabriel began teaching her and she began learning other styles outside of classical. Celtic, Bluegrass, Jazz and Blues were rapidly becoming part of Cody’s repertoire She was accepted into the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1995 and continued to play with them, up to 1997. Cody was also part of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, which was St. Xavier University’s Orchestra. Cody graduated from Morgan Park Academy in 2000 and was accepted, on scholarship, to
Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
Cody studied with Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pop members, Melissa Howes and Sandy Kott. She also studied with world-renowned jazz violinist, Matt Glaser, and world violinist, Mimi Rabson. Cody played in a number of bands including the bluegrass band, Home Sweet Home, the rock band Anursha , The Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra, and Mystiq, an electric string quartet. Cody has been a featured in many performances in the Berklee Performance Center and has also released songs on Koch records. During December 2003- February 2004, she toured Greece.
After graduating in 2004, Cody moved to New York City, where she is a freelance violinist (performing and recording) and private teacher. In December 2004, Cody was invited to Houston, to perform, as a guest soloist with Orchestra X. Cody’s most recent project is the all girl group Eden. Comprised of two electric violins, one electric cello and one electric harp. Debuting in Dubai, Eden played in the prestigious Madinat Theater and also played for the Queen of Qatar, at her sons wedding. Most recently, Cody started playing with hip-hop star Kanye West. Performances included, a show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Boston’s Tsongas arena, the Late Show with Dave Letterman, and a MTV Special.
Cody continues to grow musically and is constantly keeping her ears open. She is the essential violinist.
