Album Notes

Colibri is Spanish for hummingbird.

Colibri is a duo that presents lively and interactive musical journeys through Latin America. Using an exciting array of traditional folk instruments, Lichi Fuentes and Alisa Peres create a bridge linking children in the U.S. with those in the Spanish speaking world. The extensive repertoire includes selections from many different countries -- from a Bolivian festival song about a mother dancing with her baby to a Chilean song about worms, as well as popular Mexican sing-a-longs.

In The Faraway Forest (En El Lejano Bosque) contains music from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, plus a few originals. Songs are played on traditional instruments including zampoñas, charango, cuatro, chekere, bongos and congas. Songs are sung in Spanish; lyrics and English translations are enclosed.

Lichi Fuentes: Named "Woman of Note" by the San Francisco Women's Foundation, Chilean-born Lichi Fuentes was the founder and lead vocalist of the group Altazor. Currently director of La Peña Community Chorus, member of Chilean new song Grupo Raiz, and public schools music teacher. She has been performing with Colibri since 1993.

Alisa Peres: Co-founder of Colibri, has played with musical groups in Ecuador and Peru, La Peña Community Chorus and Karumanta, a Bay Area Bolivian ensemble. She is also a bilingual teacher and music educator.

Colibri: In The Faraway Forest

We heard Alisa and Lichi perform live when my daughter was 2 or 3, and our entire family has loved their music ever since. I've given this album as a birthday present more times than I can count. Their music is exhuberant, delicate, sweet, exciting and more. Alisa and Lichi sing beautifully together. The instrumentation on the songs is really wonderful and the rhythm section is always interesting. We've listened to this album many, many times and always enjoyed it.

This is a delightful recording full of interesting rhythms and natural sounds. I also purchased the other Colibri recording after hearing La Mariposa on a compilation disc of World Music. I am planning to use them in my teaching of music to bilingual children in New York City. I look forward to more from Colibri!

This CD has a great collection of Latin songs that are enjoyable for both adult and child. I love the lyrics and the music. I also like the cover which has both Spanish and English lyrics. Good way to teach your little one some Spanish and to just appreciate the rythyms, and dance w/ your little one, too.
