The Colonies are a band spawned of dislocation. South African born front man Dylan Kemlo, met up with fellow antipodean Matt Eyre, whilst working a record store in London. Drummer, Tim Dansie and trumpet/keys player Delphine Lopes were later drafted in from their circle of friends to complete the sound.
Their first decisive step was to convert the loft above Dylans' apartment into a fully functioning rehearsal space. This base has provided the necessary distance to chip away at sounds, oblivious to the fickle tastes of scenesters. An attitude to isolation that has them revelling in the idea of adopting musical personas for each song, placing them at a distinct advantage in the studio. Their debut, while eclectic, has a cohesion borne of a crafty adventurous spirit that does not serve to alienate, but rather seduce. Their sonic goal being to leave listeners stunned, "like the tourists at the King Solomans' Mines themepark".
Live shows have provided a platform to deliver their set with the humour in which the songs were conceived. Dark wit slides casually in and out of the taut, sometimes sparse arrangements. A constant reminder that there is an undercurrent of depth to everything they do.
