ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Color Bars are a Seattle based indie-pop band whose arrival on the scene has been described as "a bigger breath of fresh air than an air vent in an underground sewer." As self-described melody addicts, they blend together Wilsonian (Brian, that is) harmonies with their own uniquely infectious melodic style to create something new and surprisingly fresh. Their songs range from foreboding laments on love via professional wrestling metaphors to anarcho-syndicalist folk chanties to the kind of glazed-eyed psychedelic soundscapes that even your mother would love. Much like their songs, their live show never disappoints. Every member sings in this band, which makes the already difficult challenge of not singing along practically impossible.

Buy this CD before they blow up!!
I heard "All Your Kitchen Ghosts" (the first track on the album) on my local college station, which usually just plays the typical 80s NYC rehash crap that seems to be popular for some reason. What an awesome change. I immediately ordered the CD and was shocked to find that the album only gets MORE diverse and even better. And, to my surprise, I found out that The Color Bars are actually a "New York" band -- but in terms of location only, not because they're insincere, monochromatic and can't really sing or play instruments. In fact, they're funny, ironic, sincere, terrific singers, awesome players (think Beck, Flaming Lips, Beach Boys Smile, etc.) These guys are going to get huge, and they deserve all the positive attention they're bound to get.

The best music we have heard in a long time
My girlfriend and I are fans of lots of music (The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, Elliot Smith, Belle & Sebastian, Beck, The Shins, etc...) Making Playthings is such a great addition to our collection. These guys have made probably the best piece of music we have come across in years. A really inventive, refreshing sound. They're even better live, but get the CD.
