Album Notes

The natural home of Irish music is the \"session\". These regular gatherings of musicians represent the best of the Irish traditional music scene: its camaraderie, and sharing of music, and its warm respect for performers of all generations and walks of life. For sessions to be successful it is important that participants have the opportunity to join in as much as possible, and learning the sets of standard traditional tunes on this CD (and in the accompanying book. Foinn Seisiún 3) will make you feel at home in a session. You may enjoy learning to play these tunes along with the CD and book, or simply listen for an insight into traditional Irish music. These CDs were recorded by some of Ireland\'s finest young musicians from Dublin and Clare and include every tune found in Foinn Seisiún Book 3.

The selections are based on a consensus arrived at over the years during our regular Tuesday and Wednesday night sessions at the Cultúrlann na hÉireann in Monkstown. Musicians from many nations have played and enjoyed these tunes. Of course, melodic settings in the Irish tradition vary across players, styles and regions, with tunes passed down from person to person, varied and ornamented. As a result, what you hear on this album may not exactly match the notation in the book, but this is a normal part of the practice of Irish music.

Tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú taitneamh as an gceol seo. Bíonn céad míle fáilte romhat i gcónaí i gCultúrlann na hÉireann, go mór mhór ag seisiún ceoil ar aon Mháirt/Chéadaoin. Finally, special thanks is extended to members of the Cultúrlann (Dublin) and Cois na hAbhna (Ennis) session groups who gave so generously of their talents and time to make the CD possible. We are also deeply indebted to Breandán Knowlton who did the recording and mastering of all tracks on the CD.

REVIEWS

They did it again !
author: Philippe Murphy
Just when you thought "Gee, I could really use yet another Foinn Seisiún CD to broaden my repertoire", Comhaltas answers our needs with this brilliant addition to their collection. What's nice about this CD is that the feeling of the recording is very different from the previous two albums. A streamlined band and a warmer sound makes it easier to pick out the different subtleties in the tunes. Also, congrats to CD Baby for making it easy to purchase the MP3 version of the album with no digital rights management. I can have a copy of the album on my PC, one on the iPod, one in the car, etc... Many many thanks for treating me like the responsible consumer that I am !
