The style of “The Pretty Ugly” is reminiscent of the golden era of hip hop yet at the same time stylistically relevant for today’s sound. Imagine putting Buckshot, Digable Planets, Sintax the Terrific with Prince Paul beats all in a blender.

Album Notes

The style of “The Pretty Ugly” is reminiscent of the golden era of hip hop yet at the same time stylistically relevant for today’s sound. Imagine putting Buckshot, Digable Planets, Sintax the Terrific with Prince Paul beats all in a blender and you have something like “The Pretty Ugly.” The sounds are fresh and this is definitely music you can vibe to. However, it is also a return to meaningful, soulful expressions of the artist’s life; a true work of art, not just a cd. Here is how Common Child describes his album:
“This album is my heart, my spirit, and my soul. Everything I say on this record comes from a place I've been. Broken, tore down, and fallen; Picked up, held, and put back together. These songs are my expressions of those places. A blend of pain, frustration, and a lot of hope, I put the pen to the pad and wrote. "The Pretty Ugly" is deep full of meaning, and I really hope those who listen can come up with their own interpretations and apply them to their lives. I really had the listener in mind throughout this project, because I know I am not the only one to go through life and wonder, "am I doing it right?" I hope this album encourages you, and helps you discover more about yourself and your situations in light of the fact that God paid a ugly price for such a pretty and precious gift: you and me. I pray this music will be as much of a blessing for you to hear it, that it was for me to make it!” – Common Child
Look for fresh guest spots from Ajax Starglider (Future Shock, Tunnel Rats), Wonder Brown (Scribbling Idiots), Jeremiah Bonds, Spoken Nerd, Big P., and label mates Afaar and Suffer. Don’t sleep on Common Child’s production skills. He also gets plenty of help from an all-star line up of producers including: Nickels (Lojique), Re:Flex the Architect (Scribbling Idiots), MattmaN (Scribbling Idiots), Wiliiam O., and Barry Hampton.
Definitely make sure you pick this project up. Not only will you be buying some of the best hip-hop around, you’ll also feed starving children and help free slaves all around the world (literally!). Proceeds from this album go to www.compassion.com, www.notforsalecampaign.org, www.dalitnetwork.org and www.rzim.org.

Yo, this CD is original and message and content is lovely. I love most of the beats, but I think it's the lyrics that keep this CD Bangin. He is mos def Repping God, and doing it in his own stlye and unashamed. This might be one of them joints that get better each time you listen to it. Give Common Child a try - Cop this joint!
