Uncommonly Cool, Common Shiner takes their name from a small, abundant fish found throughout streams and lakes in the Midwest and Northeastern United States. In the same scope, the band writes songs seeking to highlight the beauty found in the common experience. From love and hope, to melancholy and anger, and all the humor in between.
Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan Common Shiner began with Calvin College friends Morgan Foster and Tim Haig desire to create music that would serve to be both meaningful and fun. After Tim moved to Pittsburgh, other members joined to complete the band. Morgan’s acoustic rock is now complete with Andrew Huisjen on electric guitar, Zach Hache on bass, and Vijay Bangalore on drums. It's been a long time in the making, but with these four, the puzzle is complete.
At first listen, Common Shiner has a fun acoustic rock sound similar to Barenaked Ladies, but the group adds their own flair and twist with clever songwriting and meaningful lyrics that appeal to a wide range of avid music lovers as well as casual music listeners. Drawing from a wide range of influences, from the lyrical qualities of Death Cab for Cutie or even Bad Religion, the jazziness of Eric Clapton, the easy-goingness of Dave Matthews, to the rock sense of Pearl Jam, Common Shiner has an impeccable way of combining all those elements for a sound that is uniquely familiar.
However, the thing that sets Common Shiner apart is the quality and thoughtfulness of the songwriting, encompassing just as many feelings and themes as their music does styles. Everyone who listens to Common Shiner comes away liking something different, and the band wouldn't want it any other way.

How awesome

This CD was so good that I had to put all the songs on my mp3 player. I like the newer songs better but this was definitely incredible. First time listening to it and I was hooked.

Great album out of Grand Rapids, Michigan

This CD was in my girlfriend's car for over two months--at first I wasn't sure if I liked it. But having given it multiple listens, and having seen these guys live now, I can say there's some really good stuff going on here. This CD is a little bit disjointed, and the recording quality isn't as good as on their new one, but the writing is almost unbelievably good. "Airborn" could've been a single in the 70s and "Too Late" should've been a single last year. "Now Now" is catchy (and they have fun with that one live), and "Ash Thursday" hits on something deeper than I've heard in a while. Oh, and "Bookstore Girl" is fantastic. Look for live versions on their myspace.

These guys should be on my radio...

A local band out of Western Michigan, Common Shiner has been making a splash at every venue they've played. This CD shows why! So Long is a mix of folk sound with rock sensibility that ranges from a bluesy feel to what I call geek-rock: The song "Bookstore Girl" (my favorite) includes references to Steven Hawking, the X-Men, and Emily Bronte, all while being about unrequieted love. "Skateboard Lady" is a que sera blues number with great guitar licks and vocals. The lyrics are deep and thoughtful, but still easy to sing along with. Definitely a worthwhile purchase!
