Album Notes

COMPILASIAN is, simply put, a collection of Asian American music. As a music lover, I am proud to call many of these artists my friends. As an Asian American musician, I am honored to call them all my colleagues. I hope you enjoy listening to this compilation as much as I have enjoyed making it. And please, if any of these songs move you in any way, reach out to the artists, buy their CDs, tell all your friends about them… or just blast the music really loud from your stereo.

BORN IN CHINESE is a phrase I encountered several years ago. Uttered by someone in a fit of ignorance, it struck me as amusing, sad, and offensive all at the same time. But rather than be angered at those words, or simply laugh it off, I decided to use it to spread Asian American cultural awareness.

Thus, I formed this company: BORN IN CHINESE. I hope that one day no one will ever be so uninformed as to believe that having black hair and almond-shaped eyes means that I was born in a country called “Chinese.” The struggle continues… at least we now have some great music to accompany it.

Wow. There are some really talented artists on this CD! I definitely have my preferences of some songs over others, but in general, the collection is really good. Great to see fellow asians rocking it out there! This is actually my first CD with Asian American artists, and I am very pleased. Thanks for introducing me to all you folks. Now I'll have to go out and seek the individual CDs for some of these artists! Great job!

This is a great mix of artists that has something for everyone. I've only heard of two or three of these artists before, and am happy to say that many of the ones I'm hearing for the first time here (e.g. Big Phony) are now some of my favorites! You won't find overproduced, overcliched, overplayed stuff here... almost everything is refreshingly honest and stylistically interesting. If you have diverse tastes, or just an appreciation for well-written music, you should give this CD a listen. You'll want to go out and buy 3 more CDs because of this one!

a robust collection

I am wonderfully surprised to stumble on CompilAsian just now! I've been following the careers of several of the artists here and have even interviewed some. From what I see Eugene Song - who I don't know - is pulling from the most creative new singer-songwriters in New York, Chicago, L.A. & San Francisco. I really like the songs that made it to the record. Some which I had only heard live have a surprising funk and groove here. I'm very glad to have the songs new to me. Terrific, I'm pleased and impressed!
