notes
I am first and mostly a songwriter. I also sing my own songs and jazz standards, dance as a performance artist at clubs, concerts and festivals, and act in the Tenderloin yGroup film repertory company in San Francisco. I write poetry too, and have been featured at readings in the Bay Area. I also perform once or twice a year in New York.
I've performed with the Apollo Jazz Group, the San Francisco Starlight Orchestra, Mal Sharpe's Big Money in Jazz, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and on television with Bobby Jones Gospel. In the works is a street theater/cabaret production based on scenes from Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, including 12 of my original songs, in which I will play Blanche DuBois.
Having grown up with both classical and folk music, I consider a good melody most important in a song, as well as lyrics that make sense. I love the process of songwriting, though I agree with Randy Newman that it is "agonizing." (But exhilarating too, Randy!) I love performing, and consider recording a necessary evil.
I'm really into variety! This new album includes many styles: Romantic Celtic-type ballads, swing, bluesy folk, and even a medical marijuana song -- listen for "Marijuana Madness" on "underground" radio!
