Singer-songwriter-guitarist Sherry Cothran delivers a stunning debut solo album. The modern rock collection "Who Let The World In" features her distinctive vocal signature on ten songs including "Carried Along," "Blackbird" and a cover of The Kinks "Tired Of Waiting For You."
For the past few years, Sherry fronted the highly acclaimed rock band, The Evinrudes, whose song "Drive Me Home" earned hit status in the southeast and landed the band a major label deal on Mercury Records.
"Who Let the World In" is rich with mood and melody. The songs on this release reflect an initial exploration of her personal and professional struggles. Sherry recounts, "It was hard making that first step of actually beginning such a work and thinking it as really separate from my life as an Evinrude. The process really started me thinking about what I was about as a songwriter, as a woman, and as a person. I am by no means finished. In fact, the whole thing made me realize that I have just started. I wanted the whole album to reflect a little of where I have been."
Produced by the four-time Grammy nominated team of producer Johnny Pierce and engineer Jim Emrich, it is fresh and youthful with an edge of maturity and experience. As Sherry says, "This record is part West Tennessee, part world, and a combination of my childhood, travels, and experiences with the Evinrudes."
Born and raised in rural West Tennessee, Sherry's earliest memory is standing up on a piano bench in the Bethlehem Southern Baptist Church belting out "City of Gold." She began touring at an early age with an all girl quartet, with big brother Steve on piano, to revivals and small town radio stations. In the meantime, she played trombone and basketball, then picked up the guitar in her mid-teens. She recalls, "The first song I ever learned on guitar was 'I Won't Last a Day Without You' by Karen Carpenter. There really wasn't any rock and roll in my house growing up, besides Elvis."
Sherry explains, "These experiences begin to best describe my musical journey. My goal is simple. I want my songs to reflect deep resonance and power in their lyrics. I have always been attracted to powerful songs. It is not so much genre but lyrics, melody, and/or rhythm that makes a song really powerful. The music can be a simple ballad or a lilting melody, but it can be sung with such presence that it can haunt you long after the power drains from the stereo. The song can seize you and shake your foundations. It sometimes does not take much to make a song resonate with its audience. Of course, when it does-watch out!"
Sherry recently acted in and wrote songs for a movie called "Novem" which is currently winning awards at film festivals all across the U.S. You can check out the film at novemsongs.com Also, one of her songs from this album, "To Be Someone" was featured on a recent episode of the ABC hit TV show, "Men In Trees." Sherry is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity at Vanderbilt University and in the process of writing songs for her next album.

It's not soul music, but it has a lot of soul

If this artist intended to showcase voice and lyrics, she succeeded. I find myself wanting to know more about her as a person, which is intruiging. I also want to put a careful ear to the words so that I can unravel the songs' deeper meaning. Really great voice. Plus it rocks when it wants to.
