Cirque du Singe Brisé®, known better by its English translation Circus of the Shattered Monkey® is perhaps one of the most revolutionary ideas to be applied to the underground music scene.

Circus of the Shattered Monkey developed nearly three years ago in a small Cambridge, MA art gallery and has since grown to being presented in six different states and in reputable rooms from The Knitting Factory, NYC all the way up to Club Metronome in Burlington, VT.

Circus of the Shattered Monkey exists to be a forum for the true artists in music, those that are not like everybody else- the visionaries, the songwriters, the experimentalists, the traditionalists and the misfits. To be dubbed monkey enough means that you have to show signs of something that not many, if any, do. That means for our audiences, once you enter our big top, you have checked out of the mainstream.

Everywhere we go we showcases artists from our rotating cast of monkey enough acts in a whirlwind presentation of what we like to call eclectic excellence.

Le Cirque schedules five acts a night and then thrown into that mix is its house band, Hypaspace, performing in between sets and the show’s producer Rich Van Vleet hosting the evening like a crazed preacher man. The constant sermon is staging the statement of how quality talent in music still exists in this modern era and how it’s being overlooked and supplemented with what he consistently says “the pretty voices of those otherwise talent less American Idol pawns, big breasted divas singing songs that sound more like commercials and mass produced bands with cookie cutter sounds designed for a ten minute shelf life.”

All of us involved know we're dealing with sounds and styles that more so fill niche markets than have mainstream appeal and we'd like to keep it that way. Our growing audience wants us to keep it that way too.

Are we total freaks? Hardly. We are songwriters, experimentalists and artists that meet our own callings instead of following the sound du jour. We are the ones that present our creative souls onstage, the ones that actually have something to say and the ones that still dare to stretch music's limits. This is a great CD for people who have eclectic taste in music, it varies in styles but still maintains a consistant mood that stays with you. The music is from emerging artists, it does not stink of money and false hype, it smells of art and true spirit.

  • I love this disc :)

Holy Moley, this CD took me entirely by surprise. At first I thought, how cute some local bands got together to support IC, so I bought the disc for that reason just like letting the boyscouts wash your car or buying a candy bar for some youth group in front of the supermarket. As a mom (and IC sufferer), I just have a tendency of doing that stuff. Then when I got it and put it in I was very surprised. Why don't people know about these acts? How come they're not famous? Ben Blanchard and Ryan Fitzsimmons are 100% outstanding, that "Don't Shake The Baby is running through my head constantly and Bryan McPherson is a knockout at the end and wow that Hypaspace is amazing. This CD never leaves my CD player. Again, I am really confused as to why aren't these acts more so known.

  • Great album - an eclectic mix of outstanding artists!!

This album is a great mix of artists from a variety of different backgrounds. Weaving through a range of styles and emotions, there is a song on here for everyone. "Blue Yonder" and "Idle Hands" are personal favorites, but there are so many good songs on here you're guaranteed to find something you'll absolutely love! A great album with a great cause.

I bought this CD solely because it is assisting in raising money to help fight the disease IC that my mother has had to put up with for about 10 years now. It's horrible what this disease does and even worse that no one knows about it. This guy Rich Van Vleet is an IC sufferer too and put out this soundtrack CD of his cool project. I just bought it to show my support and discovered that this guy has an awesome taste in music. This CD makes me want to see his show and get into the other acts on this disc even more. I am in love with Ben Blanchard. Sean Altrui frightens me in that cool way and The Corduroys know how to rock. Then there's this Ryan Fitzsimmons guy and a crazy dude going off on a rant about how much he hates the cover of "Paved Paradise and Put Up A Parking Lot" and it all opens with a freak out spoken word piece. I genuinely love this CD! Thank you Mr Van Vleet for acknowledging a disease that so few support and for creating something that I'm very curious in seeing. Get this show to Florida soon!
