Cottonhead is Mary Birdsong (who was featured on the CBS sitcom Welcome to New York w/Christine Baranski and in a new Cheri Oteri CBS sitcom "Loomis") on vocals, downtown rock producer Greg Talenfeld on guitar, banjo and harmonica, Jeremy Chatzky (Ronnie Spector, The Angry Inch, Bruce Springsteen) on the bass, Joe Mendelson (Rise Robots Rise, Joe Henry) on piano, organ and accordian, and Kirsten Jansen (the sexiest drummer since the revolution) on drums.
Cottonhead has been playing on and off for years in their home of New York City, a regular at The Living Room, Arlene's Grocery, The Mercury Lounge, Fez and other fine venues (although no longer welcome at the Elbow Room) to generally favorable reviews. Stemming from the country-western duets of The Talenfeld-Birdsong collaboration "The O.K. Canaries", Cottonhead plugged it in and turned it up in the early 90's, and despite sporadic reports of their break-up, the band invariably re-appears with a new CD and a new bass player.
Their album Pretty Flower Cover samples the first 5 years of Cottonhead's voluminous output, and is available from OK Records.

Here's what the press has said...
Cottonhead's music is a masterpiece of understatement. Singer Mary Birdsong and guitarist Greg Talenfeld have the technical skills to embellish their songs far more than they do, but there's never a superfluous note.
-TIMEOUTNY
New York's Cottonhead has the uncanny ability to fuse classic country song structures with more contemporary indie-pop sounds... Cottonhead writes songs with a charming mixture of sweet singing and roadhouse-bluesy
guitars.
-CMJ NEW MUSIC REPORT
Cottonhead bridges the chasm between country & western and indie-rock in an effortless way that brings out the best in both genres. Sweet and tender, with shocking eruptions of vocal passion and six-string muscle, and the sexiest drummer since The Revolution...

Think Cowboy Junkies or Mazzy Star with more emotions than weary. Be sure you hear "My Jersey Angel". Great dramatic arrangements reminded me of the best classic rock Procol Harem or Van Morrison. Emotions worn on a dusty and sweaty sleeve. You have to catch their live show. A really moving performance. I think this CD will be a favorite.

This CD rox my sox. Mary Birdsong's vocals and greg on the guitar is like a match made in heaven. This is great for a cold rainy day when you can just curl up on a couch with some hot cocoa and let the music take you elsewhere. Get this cd because you definitely won't regret it.
