Album Notes

Council of One is the musical manifestation of guitarist Chris Oberst. Chris plays a unique style that veers between jazz, rock and metal. Strong musical chops are in evidence, but Chris does much more interesting things than those cats who just play really fast, really often. Although Chris has a background in rock-based instrumentals (think Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), Council of One represents a turn toward an improvisation-centered style of jazz that is amped up, edgy, and unconcerned with any musical boundaries recognized by the so-called “experts.” Inspired by the heady days of avant garde and fusion jazz in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Council of One is on a journey to explore new sonic frontiers and take the listener to new places.
