ABOUT THE ARTIST

They once were Count V and now they are The Count! They are already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a "One Hit Wonder" - but more than three decades after their last climb up the charts, they are trying to do it again! Count V is best known for their hit "Psychotic Reaction" 1966 which hit #5 in the US and #1 worldwide. They produced three albums.

Roy Chaney, original bass player for Count V, organized the Count over 9 years ago. Roy wanted to use as many original Count V band members as possible and put together a new band with a strong original rock and roll feel to it. Through their recording process, Roy and Robert Berry insisted on only the best going out to the CD. Roy says that " Working with Robert Berry, our Producer, was great. Each band member "clicked" with him just right. We want him to do our next project, too."

Roy has formed many bands over the years, playing locally in the San Jose & San Francisco Bay Area. Although he played bass with Count V, Roy plays lead guitar with his new band, The Count. He is an accomplished songwriter and his talents shine brightly with this band. Each musician compliments the other. He lends his vocals in back up on several songs.

John Byrne, original Count V lead singer & rhythm guitar, liked Roy's idea and performs two of his songs on this CD (Hold My Soul & White Powder). Quoting Brad Kava, writer for San Jose Mercury News, "The two songs sung by John Byrne have a Bad Company-like edge. They rock on "White Powder," while John sings of the dangers of cocaine. "Hold My Soul," has that psychedelic era frenzy, with a touch of Jim Morrison." On this project, John was instrumental in guidance and style on several songs you will hear.

John Byrne makes numerous appearances with other bands in California whenever he can, singing "Psychotic Reaction" as well as being a special guest on this project with The Count. His song writing speaks for itself and shows depth of character, oozing with emotion and catchy hooks.

Rocco Astrella, last original drummer and honorary member of Count V, is The Count's drummer as well. (Count V original drummer, Craig Atkinson, died in 1999.) Rocco provides a strong professional base for all of The Count's musicians to shine like new pennies. He can belt out a hard rock tune like "Hold My Soul" or "Lover Boy" and turn around to play a catchy ballad like "Everytime."

Rocco's talents have warranted him playing with various artists such as John K. (Steppenwolf), the Doobie Brothers, Stevie Nicks, Wiley Crawford, and Joe Perry Project. Rocco is also the co-producer of this CD and sings backup vocals on several songs.

Phil Indovina plays rhythm guitar with The Count and is a long time friend of Roy Chaney. When Roy decided to put this band together, he hooked up with Phil whom he had jammed with for several years. Phil provided the platform from which The Count was able to rehearse whenever they wanted. He built a private studio where the band rehearses several times each week. He has always gone far beyond the call of duty.

Along Roy's way in forming his band, he was introduced to Dorise Ataide. She had heard of the band and dropped in one night to hear them jam. Dorise quickly became hooked and started showing up at every rehersal. She's been an avid songwriter on her own for over 25 years and quickly blended right in. That was almost 9 years ago.

Dorise adds a passionate, sexy and soulful style of singing to the band. On track 9 of the CD, Dorise sings a song John Byrne wrote "See You In The Morning" with intense emotion and passion. John was certainly pleased with her version of his song. The last track on the CD sung by Dorise, is an old song that John wrote and sung on one of Count V albums called "I'm in Love Again". Dorise recently said, "Being able to sing John's songs was a highlight for me in doing this project. It is total pleasure working with these extremely talented people. When we decided to have Robert Berry produce the CD, I was blown a way! He's well known around here. I knew it would be a great experience from day one for each of us!"

The Count's newest member and bass talent is that of Vincent Lopez. He has performed with numerous San Francisco Bay Area bands for many years such as Malo. Vince adds a special zest to The Count. With his vast knowledge of music theory and a keen ear for sound, he blends with the other members of the band with smooth grace. He is a welcome addition to the group. A strong player, indeed!

The Count's producer, Robert Berry, performs on the CD as a special guest musician. At the time of recording, the band did not have a bass player. Being the talented artist that he is, Robert jumped right in performing bass, keyboards and special effects on the entire CD. Robert's long list of accomplishments include forming a band with Keith Emerson & Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Sammy Hagar and his own band, Robert Berry Band. Robert owns Sound Tek Studios in Campbell, California where The Count recorded this CD project. Like Roy Chaney said, they are planning on recording their next CD with him sometime this summer.

Over the years, The Count has evolved into a classic style rock and roll band that is hard to find these days. Not having the pressure to produce mass amounts of songs (like record companies make bands do,) they have had lots of fun working out each song so that it sounds just like they want it to. They sound new and fresh with twists of old here and there for texture. Quoting again from writer Brad Kava's article on the band (see San Jose Mercury News, 8/21/02, Arts & Entertainment) "A lot of the other songs have a vague Fleetwood Mac feel. It's classic rock at a time when people are craving just that!"
