From Seed to Stone ... shimmering melodies and night-sky beauty.
author: Dean Pajevic
After listening to their first self-titled recording, I expected more of the same energetic yet elegant moods and tones.
Boy was I surprised: the new record, From Seed to Stone, is full of melodies upon melodies propelled by horns, piano and pedal steel that entrance the ears and get your foot tapping. But then bass, drum and cello textures float in and lift the imagination like the sudden appearance of electric red and green Northern lights in a suburban backyard sky.
You stand there transfixed by this awesome alien beauty, these shimmering veils of cymbals and pedal steel, these thrumming, sputtering electrical arcs of piano and the smooth lilt and flow of horns flowing into waves of tender and sad cello. Each song is a journey, hang on and enjoy!
Standout cuts include: The Milk Princess, Panama Line and the Moon Man. A great record, County Road X is music worth hearing.
P.S. These guys play around a lot. If you get the chance, go see them live.
