Cowlick Lucy is funny without being campy, sweet without being cloying, and sincere without being pretentious. Sort of like a tray of girl drinks, but without the hangover. "Each day goes by so fast" are the first words that open Cowlick Lucy's "big deal so what", a hazy lyric that gently welcomes the listener into a gorgeously rendered song of love, "Let's Hide Away (That Day Will Never Come)".
The trio picked up songs from friends, acquaintances and favorite rockers, as well as penning some of their own. Paula Jones crafts clever songs about the intersection of women and men - lacerating the follies of proud men and the women who unknowingly manipulate them.
Cowlick Lucy has something that's largely been missing from pop music since rock and roll became "rock" -- the qualities of innocence and charm. The girls, Vivian Kao and Paula Jones, along with Dan Barry, the guy drummer, tap into the magic of the early sixties girl group era, a time when teen bubblegum music wasn't cynically packaged by corporate swine. They take this sound as a starting point, and mix it with other genres including country, blues, rockabilly and straight ahead rock and roll. The band serves up a mix of their own original music and eclectic covers by some of the DC area's best song writers, including Karl Straub, Scott McKnight, and Jonathan Spottiswoode, to name a few.
