Another Triumph

I own all three Cowlicks releases--each one has it's own character and focus--to me this one is the most eclectic and mature of the three, from Todd's return to his beloved surf music (of which he is an unqualified master) with the rousing "Cow-Abunga" to a fabulous cover of "Sweet Emotion". And in between--the Cowlicks own unique (alt) take on classic country which is rich in great lyrical imagery and top-notch musicianship. Each cd is fab, tho--and well worth the price.

It's tempting to say this is the best Cowlicks album yet, but then you realize that would be a disservice to the first two, which were also great.
On the surface, this appears to be, both musically and lyrically, the most flippant Cowlicks album to date. And while it is no doubt the most light-hearted, the more you listen to it the more you realize that there are many layers to it. After the first couple of listens you begin to realize that lyrics that at first seem almost silly in fact have a depth to them. A perfect example is Store No More.
The same can be said for the music. At first it sounds like fun, foot-stompin' infectious twang. Which it is, but repeated listens reveal a deep excellence in musicianship.
I can't say that if you're new to the Cowlicks this is the place to start, because you could start with any of their albums and the end will be the same; before long you'll buy the other two. Just save time and buy them all.

Another home run for the Cowlicks

Plainly put, this is a fantastic album. It's fun and accessible on the first listen, but subsequent listens peel back layer upon layer of superb musicianship and clever, literate lyrics. Not an album you're likely to tire of quickly; After a dozen or so listens over the span of a week, I still enjoy it more and more with each listen.
