Chris Pureka, a recent graduate of Wesleyan University, started playing guitar when she was 16. In college she sharpened her songwriting skills and began to cultivate a group of fans playing open mics and warming up audiences for folkie favorites including Erin McKeown, Pamela Means and Tami Hart.
Chris first came to wider spread attention when she co-wrote and recorded two pieces on nationally renowned slam poet Alix Olson's new CD Built Like That. Working in the studio with folk singer Catie Curtis on drums and Chris on guitar and backup vocals, they cranked out the two songs Checking my Pulse and Eve's Mouth. One of these songs, Checking My Pulse has been one of the most successful on the album, topping the Outvoice charts as number one song. Chris followed up this success by embarking on a nation-wide three month tour with Alix last summer, both performing with Alix and opening sets with her own music. Playing a total of thirty cities across the country from Provincetown to Portland, Oregon, they rocked venues from La Pena in Berkley to the Oregon Country Fair to the Atlanta Pride festival. In addition, throughout the tour they had the opportunity to share the stage with such up and coming artists as Bitch and Animal, Doria Roberts, Pamela Means, and Ellis, to name a few. Chris now has her own self-titled, self- produced CD that demonstrates her complexity of guitar style, mature musicality and thoughtful lyrics. Chris' songs have now been played on indie radio stations from California to Illinois and as far away as Australia. Chris' main influences include Melissa Ferrick, Pamela Means and Peter Mulvey.

    I saw Chris perform live at Crows Pace (aka Malcolm's apt) and was hooked for life! Her CD's just don't do her justice... I love her throaty voice and spine tingling lyrics!

    There is some girl out there in Northhamton Mass. and her voice... that has yet to be discovereed in Germany.     I first heard Chris when she opened for Melissa Ferrick, and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! I quickly purchased her current cd (Driving North-another cd I highly recommend!!!)at the venue, but I wanted more!!! This cd is just as awesome!!! The two haven't left rotation in my cd player ever since!!! I recommend her to everyone who loves to hear a beautiful voice, well written song, and awesome guitar playing!!! Go see her play!!! Her energy is incredible!!! Just listen and you too, will be BLOWN AWAY!!!

    I discovered Chris through some friends. I listened to a few of her songs on cdbaby.com and thought she was fantastic! I ended up buying both CDs and I haven't stopped listening to them since I got them! Beautiful voice, incredible guitar playing, amazing songwriting! Definately a CD you have to have for your collection of great music!

    This cd is a great showcase of Pureka's vocal and musical talents. Thought provoking lines and guitar playing that makes me want to grab my hair brush and play rock star in front of the mirror. And if you think THIS cd is good, check out her latest release (www.chrispureka.com), it blows this one out of the water. An improvement on an already outstanding showing, it's one for keeps.

    Amazing! Her down to earth lyrics mixed with her awesome guitar playing make this cd a must have for anyone. Actually you need to get 2 or 3 so you have one in the car, the house and one for your friends. If you can you need to catch her show.
