Craig Haller's musical span as a singer, songwriter, and performer is both vast and precise. Growing up in Colorado, a cesspool of musical variety, Craig submerged himself in the likes of genre defining artists such as: Wilco, The Beatles, Radiohead, Nickel Creek, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan. His music incorporates various elements of rock, pop, folk, blues, and experimental; and could justly be dubbed as alternative.
Haller uses his songwriting as a platform for diving into self discovery, while simultaneously paying homage to his numerous influences. This results in a sound that is emotionally compelling and uniquely distinct. His lyrics invoke imagery that blends the internal landscapes of the heart with the physical landscapes of our world. They are poetic and deeply cerebral. Although Haller’s songs are accessible, they are most rewarding when given thought and attention to detail. In his own words, “Listening to music effectively is similar to relating to the people in your life. The more time you take to understand and appreciate it, the more you see its wisdom and light, and come to depend on it.”
Craig performs with a sense of passionate purpose; his voice is well ranged and stylistically limitless. He exploits his command over it to create a wide palette of emotional possibilities. Whether breaking hearts or bobbing heads, his voice can strike the very center of your being.
Craig Haller’s first album, “Above the Clouds”, was released in September 2007. It chronicles a growth period in his life, both personally and professionally. It was during this time that he quit his day job and naively ventured into the world of professional music. The album is a DIY recording in which Craig played roughly a dozen instruments. The recording process spanned four states (AZ, CO, NJ, and NY). He recently finished recording a follow up EP called, “A Brief History”, which will be released in the summer of 2009. The recording took place at SharkNose Recording in Tempe, AZ. The effort is more collaborative than that of its predecessor, drawing upon the skills of several area musicians, particularly multi-instrumentalist Neil Bunker. “A Brief History” shows a maturing and capable artist furthering his sonic explorations and refining his craft.
