Album Notes

Decades before indie labels were the norm, and years before women had any real access in the industry, Cris Williamson was changing the face of popular music. She conceived of a national all-women's record company, which subsequently issued her now-legendary classic, The Changer and the Changed -- one of the best-selling independent releases of all time. An entire sub-culture came to be around her songs and her music. A movement was established. Her out politics and pro-environment stance paved the way for many of today's artists. She is part of the curriculum in Women's Studies programs around the world. Her songs are sung around campfires and appear in hymnals and are covered by the young rockers of today. And whether she is gracing the cover of Ms Magazine or selling out Carnegie Hall three times, Cris's many and varied accomplishments are only to be overshadowed by her amazing voice.

What a classic album. If you are familiar with Cris's work, then this is a must for your collection. As always, such well crafted songs, crystal clear production, and that voice! Personal favorites, the title track 'Fringe' and 'Alazan'. If you are not familiar with Cris's work, save yourself some time and postage and get 'The Essential Cris Williamson' or 'The Changer and The Changed' as well. This will get you started. Oh and you'd better bookmark this page.

Wonderful

Get ready for another spiritual experience! This new CD is wonderful, warm, rich with the clear resonance that is Cris Williamson's voice and packed with the awe and adventure of life lived full of wild west dreams. This one has already reached 'classic' status in my book. Theresa Trull, Vicki Randle, Woody Simmons, Barbara Higbie all lend their various and amazing musical talents to the work, so it very much seems like a trip home. The songs are so full and wonderful, with Cris' beautiful tribute to the passing of her beloved horse, another song played on the distinctive strum stick for Murder of Crows, and a lullabye for a whole new generation of babies welcomed to sleep with Cris' voice (this time with horses coming to take the cowboys and cowboy-girls to dream time). And I can't get enough of the song about Reggie Jo riding 4 winter miles to the mail to get the big seed catalog. I dare you not to laugh along (maybe in recognition?) as Jo nearly freezes for the dream of flowers. . ."halo gratis". I wake up singing along. This is a must have purchase, and I'm sure we'll be hearing these songs in our cars and headphones and at concerts as women's chorus members work on arrangements of "the Women are Singing Tonight".

Cris Williamson's pure, luscious, beautiful voice shines through on this wonderful album of thematic songs. Skillfully written and passionately delivered, this is, simply said, a stunning album. All of the tunes are instantly memorable! Don't miss the gorgeous duet with Vicki Randal ("Lopin' Along Through the Cosmos"), and the tear-jerker, "One Wing Through the Wall", which she shares beautifully with Teresa Trull. A MUST for anyone who's followed Cris's work, and for anyone who longs for music that stirs the soul! Bravo Cris!
