Randy Clark, Composer and guitarist for the vocal-less quartet Crowsong, makes his electric axe sing at the edge of feedback, wields a slide against his acoustic strings with ingenuity close to that of Cooder and Lindley, and generally creates a mysterious exotic vibe in a cobbled-together tradition whose gurus might include John Fahey, Sandy Bull, Harvey Mandel, and Bill Frisell. Bassist Edo Castro, drummer Skooter Fein, and percussionist Wade Peterson play crucial roles on these 13 instrumentals, but Clark's vivid timbres, mercurial ideas, and novel spins on eclectic influences (country, western, Delta blues, jazz, rock, Indian) give them their intoxicating and memorable personality. When he's not busy playing with CROWSONG, Randy Clark has picked and strummed with some great San Francisco bands. He joined Jim Thomas for a stint in the Mermen, and played with the Billy Nayer Show at the Sun Dance Film Festival. His noisy film score work has been featured in trailers for the San Francisco and Chicago independent film festivals, as well as a host of other twisted films. He's taught hundreds of people to play music in the basement of Haight Ashbury Music and at the Blue Bear School of American Music. Randy has also written an instructional book (The Alternative Guitar Chord Book, 1996), and a series of columns for Guitar Player magazine. He's studied music in India and holds a Jazz Studies degree from Ithaca College. After seeing Martin Simpson play slide guitar "about a hundred times(!)," Randy has emerged as a force in modern guitar playing.

Very solid instrumental album.

Very solid musicianship on this album. The slide guitar work is great, and intermittent themes of middle eastern influence are a nice touch. Guitar players especially should check this album out.
