This is good stuff.

Matt Crumpton does a good job contrasting a variety of sounds that feel like they all belong on the same album. I like all of the songs except for delirous, which is a little scary with that crazy laugh. I think the best songs are Song For Brooke, which is sad but the lyrics in this song are some of the best I have ever heard, Someone Else, also a bit of a sad ending but it also has great lyrics and a catchy melody, and Pretend because I cant stop singing " I pre-tend not to need you, then again when can I see you?" Good stuff!

Crumpton debut strong on mellowness, weak on pop
author: The Lantern
On this record, Matt Crumpton, showcases his songwriting ability and inability simultaneously. He is truly gifted at the art of the ballad or mellow song in general, but falls short when approaching the upbeat tunes and songs that can keep a person awake. In Pretend, Crumpton begs "don't wake me this time/sweetheart just let me pretend" with an empathetic voice and words that the listener can feel. Fireworks is a beautiful ballad that showcases Crumpton's piano work nicely. The album's best song, Song For Brooke (rumored to be about the late Brooke Bossman), uses creative chord changes and some of the most emotive lyrics I've heard recently. The trouble with Crumpton is the difficulty that he has writing pop songs. He completely fails to seperate himself from the pack of college singer/songwriters. This is illustrated well in Heaven and the Ocean when Crumpton croons to a girlfriend, "We've got this plan/to live in peace/where the ocean touches the sky and meets the sand." The song is just awful. It sounds like every bad Barenaked Ladies song that never made it on pop radio. Gridiron Glory, chronicling Crumpton's days as a Strongsville quarterback, is not a good song by any means. But it is unavoidably catchy. All in all, the results are mixed. The record is worth buying because of Song For Brooke, Pretend, Fireworks, and Someone Else alone. However, I would advise any person who wants to hear quality music to skip over any track that contains an attempt at pop.

Crumpton's cd is one of my faves!
author: Steph M.
Obviously The Lantern doesn't have adequate people write their reviews. I don't agree that Gridiron Glory is terrible! In fact, that is one of my favorites! Crumpton's cd is definitly one of the best I've heard in a long time. I can listen to the entire thing without skipping a track! The emotion he puts into his songs makes everyone quite enjoyable to listen to. There should be more guys like this on campus, ones not afraid to express their love to a girl. Other than song for brooke, and gridiron glory like mentioned above, my other favorite is definitly Average Love. I cracked up the entire song. Who says he can't sing pop? I think everyone should get this c.d. I'm anticipating his next release...if there ever is one!
