cryptic scenery, a german underground act oscillating somewhere between singer-songwriter material with a dark edge and minimalist structures, hypnotic sounds and ambient atmospheres, has been into action since late 1994, releasing a number of cds and cd-rs, mostly via the danish label bsbta, over the years - which varied in their styles, but with an emphasis on the atmospheric element.
the album 'ontic', released in late 2003, collects thirteen pieces with the songs dominating (complemented by two instrumentals and various instrumental passages in several songs) and the lyrics covering philosophical ground: the topic of 'being' is addressed in various ways, hence the title. but we're not in a philosophy lecture here, as evidenced by the heterogenuous material which still comes across as one entity: melancholy indie ballads, stately hymns, ambient passages, hypnotic repetition, wide spaces, delay worlds, spoken word, noisy elements, impassioned and interpretative singing - it's all there, making for a both challenging and beautiful album.
