this is cryptic scenery's first full-length cd release, dating from 1999. seven songs somewhere between dark and/or new wave and hypnotic repetition, ranging from compact beautiful tunes like "oceanic feeling" to mesmerizing spheric sounds ("the chill"), or from the slow twang-laden twelve-minute epic "my mother flies" to the minimalist stripped-down sounds of "no tomorrow". in retrospect, this was as catchy as cryptic scenery would get - and still, there is a unique sound about this album, with its glassy new wave guitar sounds, its warm, introverted vocals with a certain bryan ferry influence and its sensitive rhythm section - it manages to keep the balance between being melancholic and tuneful. hum along or allow yourself to lose yourself in the oceanic feeling.

An enchanting forray into melancholy melodic indie/goth-but-not-really/pop.
author: C. Kann
At times soothing (Joseph on a Plain, My Mother Flies), at times exhilarating (Spoon Lost in the Snow, The Chill), 'Oceanic Feeling' is an enchanting forray into melancholy, melodic indie/postrock/goth-but-not-really/pop, with a distinctly European feel. Jangly guitars, atmospheric synths and powerful vocals spread across 7 tracks, at 34 minutes. This 1999 release ought to have been a hit! But as we know, it is only large record labels with massive promotional capabilities that can make an album known to a larger audience. In time, I hope 'Oceanic Feeling' will be considered a sought-after (lost) classic, before finally getting the recognition it deserves, when reissued for a new generation of listeners. Meanwhile, I recommend you get the CD now that you have the chance!
