Musician and songwriter Curt Schatz formed The CS Audio Project as a “project which is about one thing: composing, recording and producing original music”. For more than 25 years, Curt has focused on expanding his musicianship and recording techniques. Hands-on experience has given him the in-depth knowledge to record his own work. From multi-track tape machines to computer-based recording, Curt’s experience in translating instruments from thought to sound to capture is limited only by imagination.
This musicianship, guitar technique and recording expertise has cumulated in The CS Audio Project. Composing, recording and producing original music...all extremely evident in the 2006 release from The CS Audio Project - Cunning Visions.
From the opening message of the track, “Cunning Visions”, to the vocal harmonies of “When I See Your Face”, musical flavor is in abundance on this CD. A wide variety of musical influences are readily apparent throughout this collection.
Old school synth intros turn to guitar harmonies and blazing shred work, a la Steve Vai and John Petrucci on the track “Cunning Visions”.
“The Greater Good” begins with heavy drums supporting acoustic guitar harmonies that gradually turn to an emotional solo and finishes with a gypsy-inspired guitar and violin duel.
The third track, “Now I Know”, is an aptly-named story of enlightenment; combining raw acoustic guitar that winds its way into a lush orchestral-filled ballad.
The fourth track is a mellow track with vintage tones and a decidedly acoustic feel. “When I See Your Face”, a tribute to people we haven’t met yet, has almost a child’s bedtime lullaby feel.
The bonus track, “It’s the Journey, Not the Destination”, is filled with the brooding guitar antics of lead guitarist Curt Schatz. From dark, ominous riffs to catchy harmony lines, this song takes it all in. Recorded much earlier, this tune, while a little rough, surely shows the direction The CS Audio Project was and is taking.
“Focus on an aim and a mission. All hopes and dreams, through Cunning Visions.”
Indeed.

While reminiscent of such 'guitartists' as Satriani and Petrucci, the CS Audio Project tracks are unique and refreshing at the least. At best, they are blueprints for what will likely become the new guitar classics, inspiring young shredders coming up in the game. It's great to get a disc like this in the mail and be so pleasantly surprised. Keep on it Curt Schatz, the guitar world needs to hear more from you.
