Layers takes a minimalist approach to songwriting and composition. Primarily using layered ostinati and catchy melodies and harmonies, each track has a unique texture and theme that attract even the inattentive listener. The album was intentionally written without drums or percussion and with very simple melodies and harmonies which tell simple stories. Each track was written with commercial licensing in mind and was intended to be edited for that purpose.
Every instrument was recorded, played or synthesized by Chris Joye, except for additional electric guitars by Taylor Barefoot on tracks 2, 4, 12, and 15 and acoustic guitars by Taylor Barefoot on track 14.
