Here is some information that Elizabeth has shared with others about her hope for rebuilding the Seashore Mission UMC on the Gulf Coast:
“My name is Elizabeth Cumbest and I’m from a community north of Pascagoula, Mississippi called Cumbest Bluff (North Jackson County). For the past five years my family and I have lived in Jackson where my Dad served as pastor of Alta Woods UMC. In January of 2006 he began serving as the Coordinator of Church Recovery for the United Methodist Church on the MS Coast. My mom, brother and I moved to Cumbest Bluff with him in June to help in the recovery effort.
During the time since Hurricane Katrina and following, God has blessed me by letting me write several songs that I hope will be meaningful not only to people on the coast but others who struggle in life. I have recorded a CD with eight songs entitled, "All Things New --Songs of Hope Following Hurricane Katrina.” All of the proceeds from the CD will help rebuild the Seashore Mission Church, a church for people who were homeless, that was washed away by Katrina. During the storm six people died at the Seashore Mission Church and another six survived the surge by riding on a rooftop.
I feel it is important to rebuild this ministry. For my 16th birthday the CD will be released to help with the rebuilding efforts and ministry there.
I will be glad to share more information about the Seashore Mission Church, the continuing need for volunteers and resources to help rebuild the coast, or about each song and its ‘story’.”
Elizabeth is a sophomore (10th grade) at East Central High School in Hurley, MS.
She is active in many school and church organizations and is a member of Caswell Springs UMC.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Rev.’s Chris and Sheila Cumbest. Sheila and Chris both serve on the staff of the Mississippi Annual Conference of the UMC. Sheila serves as Director of Ministerial Services and Chris serves as Coordinator of Church Recovery. She has one brother, Jesse who is in the 6th grade at East Central Middle School and who has also helped with the graphic design for the CD.
