Overwhelmed? These CDs will help you... in ways you may not yet realize. Of course they will make passing the herbal portion of your TCM licensing exams much easier. But, more importantly, they will make you more clinically effective. Deciding what modifications to make to your patient's root formula to address her/his concerns is challenging enough without having to go look up the ingredients of the root formula again and again.
After listening to Tunes on Tangs for a few months, the songs will be with you for a lifetime and you won't have to keep checking your textbook. Join TCM students and practitioners around the world who are learning their Chinese herbal formulas the fun and easy way... with Tunes on Tangs!
This double CD-set is a modern version of the age-old tradition of transmitting Chinese herbal knowledge through song. It includes the functions and ingredients for 63 of the classic herbal formulas (all those required for the California state board exam) sung to the accompaniment of catchy pop music.
Tunes on Tangs is a popular study aid that employs a time-tested learning strategy, bridging the gap in resources available to non-Chinese speaking students and practitioners of TCM. It includes over 110 minutes of music in a convenient format, providing the freedom to study almost anywhere. A handsome 20-page lyrics booklet is provided, allowing the listener to sing along or carry as a quick reference.

So, what do you think? A little quirky, but that will just help you to remember the songs more easily. Kind of like those annoying commercials you can't get out of your head! Notice that for each song, the lyrics are sung twice, followed by the music repeated once more without vocals, in order that you may test your knowledge by reciting the words without assistance.
Over a thousand students and practitioners around the world are humming Tunes on Tangs as they construct formulas for their patients or take exams, and have conveyed abundant gratitude for the help it has provided them (Check out the reviews below). So what are you waiting for? Pick up Tunes on Tangs today!
About the artist:
===========
Joseph Curcio, L. Ac., has a private acupuncture and herbology practice in El Segundo, CA. He is a professor of Medical Physics at Yo San University of Chinese Medicine.
Joe was born and raised in Chicago. Because of his aptitude for applied sciences, he chose to study metallurgical engineering in college. However, his passion throughout his teenage and early adult years was music. Upon receiving his B.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, IL in 1995, Joe decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician.
While working a number of odd jobs as he tried to establish his musical career, which included a three year stint as an aerospace engineer, Joe came to the realization that the music industry was not the dream he had anticipated. During this same time period, he became increasingly more interested in Eastern spiritual practices and began practicing Hatha yoga, going on to become a yoga instructor in 1999.
Despite his daily yoga practice, Joe was plagued by recurring headaches, and so visited an acupuncturist at the urging of a fellow yoga practitioner. He was delighted to discover such a comprehensive and all embracing field as Oriental Medicine, and realized soon after receiving his first treatment that he had been led to his calling. Joe began his formal studies at Emperor's College of TOM in January, 1998. Apart from Oriental medicine, Joe enjoys hiking, cooking, and practicing yoga, and, of course, playing music.

Great way to learn herbs and be able to recall them. Made learning fun.
author: S. Bevan, L.Ac.Great way to learn herbs and be able to recall them. With all the memorizing in school, this made learning the herbs fun. I've tried other learning tools for acupuncture points and herbs and I'd highly recommend this CD.
Very helpful
author: Zhanna PatakyThis CD will help me pass the National exam. Do not pay attention to my 2 star rating, this was accidental due to glitch when entering information. This CD is 5 stars.

author: kimberly stephensonAwesome way to "stay up" on my herbs!
author: Marcy B. NewmanI'm a practicing Doctor of Oriental Medicine in Santa Fe, NM for nearly 2 years & love working with herbs! I finally ordered this CD to keep my knowledge optimal for practice & love how this CD helps me do that!
Really catchy
author: SaraI just started Herbs and started listening to the CD at the same time. The tunes keep floating into my head so the material seems familiar even when going over it the first time. I listen in the car; even the kids know which formulas "make you pee some more"!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
author: MiriamI got a copy of your CDs and am so grateful for the work you put into them. I feel I have a good grasp of my formulas and the memory recall is so easy! I never would have been able to make it through my Formulas classes (and ace them) without your CDs. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
Very Effective. Well worth the effort. If you like music, it pays off in a big
author: Mitchino HarrisPlaying and loving music my whole life made the decision easy for me to try this method of memorization. Simply put, I have no problem recitind the over 60 herbs formulas for the CA state board exam. You must dedicate to learning the songs. Listening intently for a few days, then it clicks and after a few brush ups its really sticks. Often I don't even know what I am saying, the words just come out and my cognitive brain must step back and "understand" the formula, so reading up on them to truly "understand" tham is still a necessity at a practitioner. But the beauty is that for testing and basic understanding is easy when you can easily sing the ingredients and associated patterns. Joe did a nice job in the production and in using original songs of his own. I've heard other formula cd's and Joe is the best presentation and production by far. The covers he chose were very appropriate and memorable, and most importantly - catchy. To the other reviewer who said that they can't get the songs out of their head- in TCM terms I think that is a Spleen qi vacuity. It's what pop music is built on, getting material to stick in our heads. But if it repeats excessively that is a personal issue. I've been able to recal it at will or leave it alone just fine. Many cultures use songs to memorize large texts (for example during a Bar/Bat Mitzvah the torah portion is sung) this is so that memory is easily fascilitated. The Chinese use songs all the time for memory. It works and the best thing is, it can't be undone. Just listen to a track when a word or two is hazy and it comes back clear. Best money I've ever spent on a study aid. Enjoy the tunes and thanks Joe! I only wish he had a compendium cd for extra formulas that aren't on the state boards of CA so I can memorize more at my leisure.
Easiest way to learn formulas!
author: Robin SchiesserListening to Tunes on Tangs and Songs on Sans is the easiest way to learn formulas. I couldn't believe how quickly I learned not only the ingredients, but also the functions and contraindications. Using these CDs was invaluable in preparing for my comprehensive and state board exams. Thanks, Joe!!!
Remembering Formulas is a breeze!
author: James HopsonIf you like music then remembering the songs in simple. Without these songs I would never have remembered the formulas, their functions or the herbs in them. Having the songs makes it a piece of cake. Whenever I have an exam with formulas I automatically start singing the songs and the answers become so clear. I do not know how I would have made it through my formula classes and the state exames without these tunes!!! It is also so much more enjoyable to study through singing instead of strait memorization. Joe has made Formulas fun!!!
Best study guide ever!
author: Lynne VanceThere is just no way I would have been able to remember all of the information in these songs if Joe had not come out with this CD. Especially the contraindications. It saved me countless hours of mundane memorization. This CD actually seems like fun while you study! It's also great in groups. Many of us at Emperor's College will spontaneously break out into song together whenever we hear anything related to state board formulas. The level of retention is unbelieveable. Even typing retention reminds me of Wu Ling San. A definite must buy for every student of Oriental Medicine.
I just can't wash those songs outta my head!
author: Jay TreatI guess that's the point. The music never stops. It helped me to pass the CA State board with flying colors. I must have spent weeks of actual time listening to Tunes on Tangs. It doesn't matter if I'm in the tub, cutting potatoes, making love or doing laundry - a song just pops up and my mind skips to the corresponding track and begins playing. It's amazing! My psychologist says the medication will help me forget them, to stop the 'instant track jumping (ITJ)' he calls it - it's a technical term. He says he's going to write a paper on it, an offshoot of obsessive compulsive behavior brought on by prolonged, exsessive exposure to the same songs. He says all the drugs, alcohol and boxing that I've done may have slightly contributed to the ITJ. But, otherwise they haven't affected my brain adversely in any way. He says he's heard of the CD, but has seen no evidence of other people suffering from ITJ. That's why he wants to write a paper on the uniqueness of my case. I actually don't mind. I like the immediate access to all the formulas in the California State board exam. When I'm treating patients, it only helps broaden my horizons and possibilities. It's a little weird if I'm making love or having a serious discussion and I start humming Da Cheng Qi Tang. But, I can roll with it. Congratulations to this Joe Curcio person who must have spent an awfully long time writing, siging, recording, mixing, packaging and organizing this whole project. My compliments to the chef. JT
