Award winning singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Nancy Hall and Lee Parvin are the creative core of The Curios. Together with a sable of talented friends they build what Northern California Songwriter has called a "wonderfully eclectic, quirky and beautifully complex musical universe". An earthier version of Feist, moldy peaches meets P.J. Harvey in a strobe lit alley, steam-folk & pirate cabaret with a cast of characters dark and dangerous.
Hall has recently completed a tour with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, twice through the US and on to Hong Kong, Japan and Australia. If you were on her E-list you'd have been treated to Road Dog Grrl; Letters to the Virtual Entourage a widely forwarded tour-chronicle that includes berzerk accounts of having been swept up in a world-class rock tour after playing the small concert hall, house concert and coffee house circuit. Hall has recorded with Young on his Greendale project and more recent Chrome Dreams II CD.
The Curios have been busy playing sold-out local shows and completing their second CD "Pillow Book", a follow-up to their debut "Everything Knows You" which was voted "Best of" on the popular Acoustic Sunrise show on San Francisco radio station KFOG. Program director and DJ Rosalie Howarth said, "The Curios are one of the three highest-reacting Artists we've had in our History". Their song "Hope for the Modern Man" won in the folk category of first ever John Lennon Songwriting contest. Ani Difranco was the judge.
The Curios play "hyphen-music": freak-folk-funk-psychedelic-cabaret, a juicy blend of mystery-rich, textural grooves and cliche-free lyrics, alternately abstract and narrative. "You can think and party", says Hall,
Comparisons? When pressed, a fan offered "If Feist and Beck had a baby that was raised in a gypsy orphanage where they put Absynth in her bottle, handed her a tuba and told her she had to play in train stations for food, that is as close as I can get."
Hall and Parvin have evolved a seamless, tandem playing that is like "psychic band mates"; they follow each other in melody and harmony like partner dancing, switching from a slow-motion piano/guitar meditation on marital infidelity called "Kiss and Tell", to a rollicking ukulele and harmonica duet about money (or the lack of it) called "Sailor on a Windless Sea".
They variously combine electric and acoustic guitars, organ, dulcimer, piano, ukulele, accordion, banjo, double bass, hand-drums and full kit drums with band mates Michael Tyler, Marc Games and James Kerwin helping to create the psychedelic pirate cabaret ambiance they have become known for.
So see a show, get a CD or two and enjoy yourself in the land of The Curios.

The Great American Songbook
author: Frank S. Reisinger
Upon listening to the Curios latest offering You may sense a certain familiarity with the songs. The first cut, "Beautiful" offers a hint as to the accessability of The Curios compositions Nancy Hall the primary writer brushes clear vocals across her musical canvas allowing her influences to bleed through, painting her as an artist to be noticed. The ascending guitar line is reminiscence in reverse of a past Nora Jones hit. Her lyrics are a conversation and her voice, genuine in its sincerity, offers emotions from innocence to the playfulness of youth The simple elegance of Lee Parvins piano and Jim Kerwin's bass build and fill this fist song yet manage to preserve to the simle motif. Harbor features a Stones like rhythm guitar while the change in the character of Hall's voice illustrates the definition oof vocal styling. Just when you get comfortable with Marc Games' quirky guitar line, Hall's voice chameleon like leads the song into a march that is part Beatles, part Doors. One of my favorites, Sailor on a Windless Sea ,exemplifies what The Curios do so well establishing a strong groove that pulls you right in. When Parvin chimes in with his low harmony his vocal seems to reach up from the depths to punctuate the despair of a sailor in the doldrums. Always Be Your Girl is a straight ahead rocker that shows Hall's maturity as a writer in that it exhibits the belief of many great songwriters that a strong chorus is the back bone of a song. In "Hollow "Hall evokes a classic 80's rock Diva. By the time you hear Cherries on the Ground you may have an epiphany. That is you may be cognizant that ,in light of mainstream marketed music, The Curios as a collective have a great commitment to the heritage of the rock genre. "Trampoline" with its lilting waltz will make you feel like a kid again. Every track on the album seems to be well placed and the one song written as a collaboration of a Games' groove will have you singing along to its Sergio Mendes Brazill '66 feel There are 15 songs on this album made the way albums used to be made. In other words there are no filler tracks. Every song is a jewel. The Curios may not be the next big thing although that remains to be seen. They are the real deal however and this work establishes them firmly in the realm of accomplished artists. With Mike Tyler's contributions The Curios have created a CD that is a blast to listen to. The Great American Songbook is alive.
