notes

Former lead vocalist and principle songwriter of Chryslis (MGM) and part time Mother of Invention, Spider Barbour releases the hounds. Aided & abeted by former touring members of The Band & current members of The Crowmatix, Jimm Eppard & Mike Dunn, Spider's songs float above & beyond the norm like a giant insect or rise from profound depths like the plantive cry of a tortured rodent. More than just songs about animals, Spider's music speaks allegorically to the human condition.

  • Unexpected and extremely enjoyable
    author: Rikki Donachie

I bought this because I know Spider's wife, Anita, and I was curious. It was wonderful. Not what I expected at all. Gentle rock with lyrics that are well crafted and will make you smile. The band themselves obviously enjoy playing together and make a good groove. I am not a big fan of dogs as a rule, more of a pussy man, if you know what I mean! but this CD was something else. I also agree with the previous review about the liner notes.

  • Brilliant songwriting, supported by skilled musicianship, that grows with repeat
    author: douglas baldwin

Music that balances the head, hands and heart is a rare event, but the Curmudgeons do exactly that on this excellent CD. Bare-boned arrangements highlight rock grooves rooted in the seventies and eighties as brilliant lyrics hover and dip about a field of animal-based references. Think Adrian belew with the Bears, or a rough-polished XTC, and you'll get the idea. Extra points are awarded for the simple yet brilliant packaging. I feel I know Spider's dogs now, and the liner notes are a howl.
