Album Notes

These tracks were recorded in 2002, after the quartet had played the Sunday night jam session at Jimmy\'s Woodlawn Tap on Chicago\'s South Side for a couple of years. (Curtis and Doug have been playing there for over 15 years.)

The selection is a sampling of what the band might play in the first set, before the jam session itself starts: some orginals, some less-than-standard jazz classics, some pieces from other traditions.

Curtis Black has played trumpet in Chicago for over 30 years, leading his own groups and playing with many local jazz masters, as well as big band, r&b, blues, salsa, compas and highlife. David Franklin now lives in Seattle and continues playing piano there with the New Bop Brigade. Kurt Schweitz is much in demand as a young virtuoso bassist. Doug Mitchell is an old-school powerhouse, with roots in the Chicago jazz scene going back to the late 1950s and \'60s.
