Imagine two men scuba diving deep in the sea. The first chases the fish, expending a great deal of energy while his oxygen tank quickly depletes. The other diver waits. In time, the fish come to him. And he still has all the air he needs.
Relating this story, Cy Curnin is likely to tell you that he has played all of the parts. The anxious diver. The fish. Even the air in the tank. Most recently, he has been the patient diver. No longer pursuing, he endeavors to live in the present moment.
Cy’s newest solo release, THE RETURNING SUN, represents who he is now, written during a tumultuous period a number of years ago. Produced by Doug Beck, known for his remix projects in NY, the record showcases Doug’s technical know-how in computer programming, which was used considerably.
The first featured track from THE RETURNING SUN is "Remember Me When I'm Gone," which features the lyrics of Jeanette Obstoj, who has lent lyrics to some signature Fixx songs in the past (such as "Secret Separation"). This was the first song Cy developed for the record.
Through his solo projects, Cy has found the opportunity to express his personal thoughts, as well as varied musical perspectives. His first solo album, MAYFLY, released in 2005, had an experimental edge; the songs all written and produced during an extremely compressed period of time.
Cy recognizes that his eclectic nature comes forth on THE RETURNING SUN. He is particularly keen to share this album because he believes it is "listenable" music and hopes it will connect with a wide audience.
For Cy, his work with The Fixx ("One Thing Leads to Another," "Saved By Zero," " Red Skies," etc.) over the past 25+ years remains an ongoing source of inspiration and accomplishment. He has learned a lot working alongside his bandmates and the friendships he shares with each of them are cherished greatly. They are currently working together to complete a new album in 2008.
Recent participation in the Love Hope Strength Foundation's "Everest Rocks" adventure to raise money for cancer and perform a concert at the highest land elevation ever has been a recent highlight for Cy, professionally and personally.

Great CD
author: Thomas Lehn
Why don't they play this on any radio station? Although the Fixx were kinda popular here in Germany, you don't get this cd in your local cd store nor will you hear in on the radio. Now I can listen to it whenever I want, thanks to CD Baby.

Different Roads

Listening to The Returning Sun makes me wonder why it is (or appears at any rate) that The Fixx did not take a greater role in the production of their own music, if the liner notes are accurate all such work was done by Rupert Hine, because it is clear that Cy Curnin has the musical chops to do an excellent job.
The Returning Sun deserves a lot more attention than it will probably get because there is some masterful songcraft within, that doesn't sounds as disposable as most of the music that turns up these days (Remember Me When I'm Gone, Falling Apart Together, Hope Springs Eternal, The Future's Not What It Used To Be, Nothing Is Normal, The World Will Always Turn, Damned If You Do deserve special mention).
I also discovered this album on eMusic. I hope that they are giving Cy the attention (and royalties) that he deserves.
