Album Notes

In thinking about the concept for this album, I remembered some of the songs that cheer me up. I thought of all the folks that are having a rough time right now and that maybe this will lighten their mood. Of course, I’ve always loved the old standards and there are so many that fall into the category of lifting one’s spirits.

How lucky I am to have worked with Kevin Ray Clark. He is a Grammy nominated trumpet player with The Dukes of Dixieland, steeped in New Orleans jazz. He worked in The Historic Distillery District of Toronto, Canada, before coming to Charlotte. Now it is back to his roots in New Orleans and Charlotte will be missing a world class musician.

This album is dedicated to my dad, Ed “Shorty” Thomson, who instilled in me a love of jazz music. I heard it all my life and it is in my bones.

I want to thank my mom for underwriting this project. She has always believed in me. Thanks also to her for the wonderful artwork on the cover.

Thanks to Kevin Ray Clark for taking this on as arranger and producer. All the guys involved in recording this were so supportive. This is my first album and they could not have been more encouraging.

What great fortune to learn of your CD on a rare weekend trip to Charlotte. I was visiting and completing some financial work for Mimi when she mentioned she'd like to attend church, something I seldom did when living there. I saw the article on your album posted on a bulletin board at eye level when I encountered Judy Ghoneim. Jotted down the date and read it late evening. Such a story, such a woman, such a voice. Just played through your entire album at one sitting. Your song choices are so needed by the human community -- hot and now. My only regret is that when we were in contact through a circle I had no idea of your musical talent and love for jazz. It's also my favorite since I was teenager. We could have hit some clubs together. I do hope I'll see you again. Thank you putting out an example of your courage, adaptability, passion, and compassion for yourself and others.
