How anyone can conjure such wonderfully diverse sounds out of the Gu-zheng (Chinese long-zither) is a miracle beyond my understanding. Striking and bending strings seemingly at the speed of sound, award-winning soloist Cynthia Hsiang creates a truly enchanting fusion of Chinese and Western folk and classical traditions. The music veers wildly from furious, passionate passages to the most meditative and tranquil melodies imaginable, sometimes within the same composition. Her Gu-zheng performances have graced the soundtracks to several Jackie Chan films, the “Jade Empire” video game, and countless stages. Somewhere in between all of that and her PHD studies in Ethnomusicology, Cynthia Hsiang has found the time to record and release 2 brilliant solo albums.
