Album Notes

about cynthia...

cynthia lin is a small taiwanese-american girl with a big voice. at age six, she won a contest by singing "are you sleeping?" in mandarin chinese. she wanted to be madonna or debbie gibson. instead she got straight As, went to princeton university, and studied economics.

she graduated and worked long hours at a software company. she sang in a jazz band and took acting classes in her free time. one day all her friends got laid off. she started questioning what was important to her. cynthia quit her job and literally jumped for joy. two weeks later, she was on stage in an award-winning professional theatre production.

while backstage, she revisited the songs she had written in college on her guitar, and began writing hundreds of bad songs. cynthia realized how hard it was to write a good song and how much she enjoyed the challenge. she started hitting open mics and cafes.

her love of joni mitchell and ella fitzgerald fed her unique style, and people noticed. she got some local radio and press attention. an entrepreneur at heart, cynthia decided it was time to make an album. nine months later, the blue and borderlined EP was born.

she began touring and playing great acoustic venues like world cafe live in philly, the living room in nyc, hotal utah in san fran, and iota club in dc. she was invited to play NXNE, the chicago asian american jazz festival, and the jeff buckley tribute at uncommon ground. she continued crafting songs.

cynthia is currently recording a new album, this time experimenting with strings, horns, and self-production. she can't wait for you to hear it. stay tuned for more about the little girl with the big voice...

Great sound. I can't wait for more
author: Norm Hecht
Cynthia Lin has a great sophisticated folk sound and a solid delivery. Nice, though way too short CD. I can't wait for more from her.

This CD is delicious. It has a vintage and almost French feel, even though it's
author: Michelle Volpe
The melodies are unpredicatable (i.e., not cliched), the guitar playing perfectly complements the vocals and song structures, and the lyrics are poetic but not obscure. Lin's voice is smooth and is equally moving when she sings softly or loudly.
